Well there this exhaust, but I was talking about

That one.. The headers look the same, but the muffler/tip looks different.. And I thought at first glance it was a yamiya.

JAG

Looks to me like the MAC header with the can removed and just a plain chrome tip in it's place.

Bike's looking good, John.

Here's the current state of the bike:

A frame that's in good shape. It wont take much to get this back to looking nice....

Piles of Parts....

I finished the final touches with light scratches and little pits in the tank, and it got it's last coat of primer and is ready for paint. I've got a lot of hours of sweat into the tank. Doesnt look like much, but it's a lot of work getting the lines smooth and even.

I believe it's the cheapest aftermarket exhaust you can find for the CB. Mac. I would like to throw a smaller baffle on it, but dont really know what's out there.

where did you get that plain chrome tip, i like the simplicity of it.

Great job on the tank.  I also have a "77 CB750 with an early tank conversion. Building the seat was the best part. Have you decided on a seat yet?

Your bike looks really nice. Are those rims painted? It's hard to tell but the color doesnt look like chrome.

Im saving for the Guiliari repro seat from Nippon. They look great and well built.

Yeah, the outer rims are powdercoated black, w\polished hubs.
Reminder, the early style seats have totally different hinges.

True, but I think I will be able to fabricate the hinges to make them work.

I dig the powdercoat. If my rims werent in such nice shape, I'd probably go that route.

Here's a picture of the paint booth I made just before completing it. I used drop plastic and taped it with box tape all along both sides of the seams. It's a pretty strong tent, plus it's air tight which helps to make it dust free. I taped up a box fan  and put furnace filters in front of it to draw the fumes into it. Just outside the tent is a window to let in fresh air also. It worked really well.

Sorry for the crappy pictures. My camera just doesnt capture objects in the low lighting basement very well. But I got the frame and swingarm painted. I used my Harbor Freight paint gun to spray and used Rustoleum professional gloss black with some hardener for added protection and shine. Looks really nice and if I get a chip, it's easily repaired. Most of the polishing was done wetsanding with 500, then 1000, then 1500, then buffed with Mother's polish. Shocks were cleaned up with WD-40 and 000 steel wool.

I started polishing the triple tree. It's about halfway there. I'm doing some accents to the bike with Rustoleum Hammered Dark Bronze and painted the triple tree handle clamps. I love this color. And the paint is hard as nails. Im really happy with this paint and how easy it sprays on.

More accents with the hammered paint. I painted the middle of the front disc. It looks so much better in person than in the pictures.

Here's the swingarm, painted the same as the frame. I painted the sprocket cover with the hammered paint to match the front. I really like how it looks against the silver.

Here's the rear brake, polished. The arm was painted with the hammered paint.

So that's where I'm currently at. Over the next few days, I'll be repainting the battery box and getting ready to install that and the wiring. Thanks for reading.

What process did you use on the forks and brake drum?  That looks like the finish I'd like on my front forks.

Wetsanded with 250 for deep scratches, then 500 grit, then 1000, then 1500. Then I used a rotary buffer (cheap from Walmart) and buffed with Mothers. It's just raw metal. Im sure I'll have to polish a couple times per year but I wont have that much metal to do as most of it will be painted.

Great pics Johnny 5, wish I could get my bike to look that good. I think I'll try out the soda bath after seeing how well it worked for you, Thanks for the info and motivation.   might try the knee pockets on my 550 as it needs a respray on the tank already.  Great pics and well documented!

Geesh Carpster, what a highjacker.

Thanks for the compliments Seaweb and Sprocket. I've currently got the knee dents on my second tank almost finished. I'll post more pics when that's done. Also, am refinishing the speedo and tach. So far so good.

Got some more work done. Mostly on the tank and speedo/tach.

I refinished the speedo/tach housings by painting them with the hammered paint. I used a generic chrome stripping that has double sided tape on it and lined the middle of the housings with that. Also modified my headlight ears by grinding off the lower part and drilling a hole for my aftermarket turn signals.

Refinished the passenger pegs. They cleaned right up with some Mother's polish.

The tank has knee dents now and needs a few more rounds of sanding then it'll be off to the paint booth.

Right now, the front brake is disassembled to be cleaned and repainted.

Thanks for reading.

Okay, got a lot of work done over the month.

Engraved the fork tubes and rear brake. I used a dremel with engraving attachments 108 and 107.

Got the speedo, tach, headlight bucket, sidecovers and tank painted. Used PPG paint and it turned out really nice.

Sidecover:

Tank wetsanded:

Tank with a couple rounds of 3M rubbing compound. Love this stuff.

Tank rubbed out with Maguiers ScratchX. Love this stuff too.

This bike is gonna be ready for Spring in no time!

Thanks for reading!
