u-HAUL

Wasn't sure where to post this question...

Which Uhaul trailer is the one that fits a motorcycle?  OR DO I SPECIFICALLY ASK FOR A "MOTORCYCLE" TRAILER?  ALSO, WHICH TIE-DOWNS DO I NEED?

I used to work at a uhaul rental, but it wasn't a UHAUl center, it was a store that also rented.  There is a specific trailer for motorcycles referred to as a motorcycle trailer.  You'll probably have to go to a UHAUL center for one as opposed to a business that also rents uhauls.
I think they also have a couple of open trailer models for ATV's and things that would probably work.  If you go to the UHAUl website, they have a rundown of what trailers you can rent.

I would make a reservation as soon as you know what you want, and be sure to specify where you're picking it up.  UHAUL was terrible about moving people's reservations to other locations if they had a bigger ($) reservation for something.  For example, if someone wanted to rent a truck for a day, UHAUL would not honor their reservation if another person called later and said they need a truck to take to Florida (those rentals are big $).  So often, the in-town customer would have to go somewhere else to pick up their truck.

Good luck,

JB-

hat is the weird thing, I have "HEARD" of this mythical motorcycle trailer, but I do not see anything resembling it on the website.  There is a 4x6 open one for $14.95.  I recall that the "motorcycle trailer" was that price for the rental, but the picture on the website has a flat front on it, and I believe that the actual specimen has a pointed front either with a wheel chock or it serves as a chock.  I am unfortunately stuck at work where i can acces the internet, but telephony is verbotten... :-\

If you have access to a truck, pretty much any truck can move one of these bikes. I moved a 550 about 300 miles in the back of a Nissan with virtually no alignment. Not a big truck, but it had a rubber mat to keep from dinging it up and we used some tie downs. (the ratcheting ones are the best) We put it on the side stand and put those tie downs on it, and for five hours I had no problems whatsoever. I was even able to close the tailgate with the bike in diagonally.

Unfortunately, I do not have access to a truck.  It comes out cheaper to pull a trailer than rent a truck for a day.  I finally snuck out and called U-Haul.  They just do not make it easy.  basically they are happy to take a credit card number and reserve it for you...then they call with availability...by 6:00 PM.  really good for planning.  For 15 bones and the cost of a decent tie-down (which I would need anyway), I doubt I can go wrong.

we've used a uhaul MC trailer a few times. they are around $15/day. Bring 2 tiedowns for front, 2 for back. You will notice little hooks in the corners of the bed to secure the tiedowns. if you've never hauled a MC like this before, make sure you compress the forks a bit when you tie it down and try to get the front wheel the whole way up. It will stay much more stable that way. Put it in gear to minimize roll too.

We were turned down one time cuz we had a Jeep Wrangler back then. Had a uhaul hitch on it, wiring all hooked up and working... they wouldn't let us rent it because it had a soft top. ???? no problem with the subaru though.  :-\

The signs on the wheelwells say 45 max MPH. I found that only going 45 lent to a lot of vibration, shaking, meandering of the trailer. When I hit 60, it rode smooth as a babies bottom.  ;D

proud to report safe arrival of said bike home.  u haul trailer hassles notwithstanding worked great
had only the tie hooks in the front not been rusted "down", i would not have had to attach to the rail.  but like i said...i own a motorcycle now!!!!

thanx for the input all.

On bikes with a sprung front end,

I never used ratchet tiedown (after helping someone load using them, huge amount of time difference)

Never put the bike on the sidestand, it is reat hard on it and harder to hold the bike if leaning over.

Dont usually tie the back down if you got a tailgate... they hardly ever move around on a box with the ribs or grooves..

But i do use GOOD tiedowns..

For future need of a truck check if your local Home Depot rents them, mine doesn't but the one next to my sisters place does. Kind of hit and miss.
