Input on starting the next project.
« on: October 23, 2008, 11:39:15 PM »
Ok so its time to start thinking about the next bike. For a while I wanted to redo my 550 but I have a complete 73 750 sitting in a corner looking sad with a stuck motor.

I want to go with a 836 or 850, mild or mid cam and a port and polish. Which already ads up pretty quick when done to a stocker. However I know of a motor sitting in the back of a diesel trailer in the corner of a junkyard. I don't think anyone else really knows its there and I am JUST skinny enough to get to it inside the trailer. It was pretty dark in there but it seems like the motor was pretty hot. All I could tell for sure was that it had a very nice port and polish job. The motor had been apart and had after market bolts and gaskets. I think there were a few humps welded on the cam cover and a oil line running from the bottom of the engine that had been tapped I guess. (Oil cooler?) And the cam cover was painted black  ;) Thats really all I could tell for sure but it just seems like its a hot motor, enough in fact I would be willing to bet on it.

With that in mind I think I could save a lot by just using that to start with. It probably already has a cam and all the goodies and would save me a bunch. Even if it ONLY has a port and polish job. Unfortunately I don't know how he deals price wise with motors. With those thing in consideration how high do you think I should go? If I am lucky he might just say 100 bucks but hes no dummy. 400? 500? 500 seems a bit high to me for a motor that I don't even know turns over but after looking at what a nice port and polish job is it does not seem too bad.

Well, if you're just skinny enough to get into that trailer, makes you wonder if he's been in there to know it's there. Offer him $100 and see what he says.

The guy that built that hot motor could heve been an idiot and it is laying outside a frame for a reason.  Tell the guy you are curious about it and will haul it off without driving in his yard, bothering his dog, or propositioning his daughter. ;D

Start with 75 bucks, if it's got a hot cam, port and poish job in it somebody must have beaten the cr@p out of it unless he can prove you wrong. Besides if only you're skinny enough to get in there, who's gonna help you get it out?

Yeah its an unknown quantity dude, unless he is prepared to give some sort of guarantee I'd offer him junk money as it could be just that.
75 bucks aint bad, see if he bites.
I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

I can probably manage to get it close enough to the side door to then try and get it out with the help of friends I guess. I know its just going to sit there if I don't take it so I will try my 75 dollar luck next time I am there. Hopefully I will have good news in a bit!!

Ok more stupid questions...

I want this bike to be titled as a 69' for the cool factor and it would probably be easier to find a late 69' for obvious reasons.

I planned on reinforcing the frame anyways but was there really THAT much improvement in the frames between the 69 and the 73? Enough to warrant starting with a 73? If so I can swap out the necks but then I got to fab up the brackets for the early side covers which would be a PITA...

Which brings me to the 3rd question.

I am debating moving the oil tank into the gas tank, but then I would lose the coolness of the stock tank and would have to make a new tank. I would also lose the ability to use the off the shelf
Guliari seat. Does anyone have any pictures of 750s that have had the oil tank and electronics moved? I see track bikes all the time with JUST a oil tank but cant seem to find any where both that and the wiring has been moved.
