I used to consider myself a competent spark plug changer. While replacing plugs on my 73 CB500, the ends came off 2 of the wires. Not one to panic, I simply cut the wires back 1/2" to freshen things up and screwed the ends back on. Feeling pretty good about myself, I start reassembly and quickly realize I wasn't the first genius to do this to the bike. The wires are stretched about as far as possible and only fit with tension on them. That's ok I'm thinking, I'll just remove them and get new wires. As I trace them back to the coil and realize they are molded in to the coils, panic sets in... Anyway, I have searched this forum for a couple of hours now and still can't find an answer to this question; will these coils (with replaceable wires) from a CBR600 F2 work properly on my CB500? A friend of mine had a set of them laying around so I thought I'd ask.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

f2 coil specs:

Ignition coil resistance -Primary- 2.5-3.1 ohms

-Secondary with plug cap- 21-25 k/ohm

-Secondary Wthout plug wire-11-15 k/ohm

Maybe? I dunno.
No.

You can replace the wires on these coils with a little bit of cutting. Leave some plastic, about half an inch, on the end where the wires leave the coil and about one inch on the other end of the coil. Cut the plastic in the middle. I'm sure there's a guide on the boards somewhere, but my search fu skills are minimal.

I'll see what I can pull up and give you a link.

Thanks, I did find and study the options for changing the wires on the stock coils. Either by cutting the coils open with a dremel or using the wire splicer method. I may go that route, but thought this would be easier if they would work.

I think I may experiment with my stock coils and post it. I've got Dyna coils on my bike so hacking the stockers open for the benefit of more pictures on the board isn't a loss to me. Gives me a chance to tinker and share information for others. I don't imagine it would be a difficult route to take and it makes the stock coils have replaceable wires.

This still doesn't answer your question... So I guess I can give it a shot :D. I think (did a little reading but it may be wrong information) those coils run a primary resistance of ~3 ohms. By my logic you'd essentially be sticking a 3 ohm Dyna coil on the bike. The stock resistance of your bike's coils is ~5 ohms. To run those coils you will want a ballast resistor of ~2 ohms on the bike.

I used this one with my 3 ohm Dynas: http://www.jegs.com/i/Accel/110/150150/10002/-1

Good luck.

the 500 already has a stressed charging system as is...most of the 500/550 experts (twotired, hondaman) here will recommend staying w/ 5 ohm coils on the 550 so you don't tax your charging system anymore.

I hate extra taxes and surely my bike does too. I think I'll break out the dremel and see what happens. Thanks to all

You could try the NGK J-1 cable coupler. Here they sell for € 6,95 per piece.
