Probably a STUPID question - Chain Links on CB500
« on: February 25, 2008, 08:03:17 AM »
I think it is 97 links on a CB500/4 - I did a search & didn't find a definitive answer. Just wanted to make sure before I cut some links out of my new chain.

that sounds a little short to me... you might check earlier links about chains on the site or the service manual

You should never cut a chain until it has been fit to the bike that it is being used on.
Measure twice and cut once.

Order a 110-120 link chain and cut to fit.

Probably best to count the links on your current chain.  The 550 has a larger rear sprocket, so a chain for a 550 might be longer than needed for a 500.
I don't find it listed anywhere.  I assume you don't have the facilities to cut a longer chain to proper length.  Maybe if you call the Honda dealer under the guise of purchase, they may look it up and be able to tell over over the phone the correct length?

I bought a new 530 chain from JCWhitney, and a master link and didn't have to cut anything.

hymodyne, how long was the chain you bought from JC?  I need to replace mine on a 500K2 with stock gearing.

My CB500s all run with the stock 17 tooth front and 34 tooth rear sprockets and run a 98 link chain, I usually just buy the 100 link chains and cut down to size.
