Hey everyone. funny picture inside.....
« on: September 23, 2008, 10:57:47 AM »
Hey everyone. This forum is sweet, I am especially stoked on the project bike forum, i plan to be posting there sometime soon. I picked up a 1971 CB750 for 200 dollars recently. It was in decent condition for the price, ran pretty rough but i put 20 or so miles on it riding around my house before deciding to try and restore it at school.
I have access to a machine shop and sandblaster (hooray for being a mechanical engineering major) so that should help things along. Here is what it basically looked like when i bought it, although the headlight is off because i had to fix some of the wiring behind it.

then i had to get it to school, but the only way i could was in my 1991 BMW 318is, which is not a big car. so i took the interior out of the car, which resulted in this.

so now its at school, and i started tearing down the rear wheel/hub because the rim was really rusty, and i figured i would replace everything back there while i was at it. So i have a bunch of questions about wheels, like what the hell mine is, since it's weirdly shaped, and is a 17x3 i think. Also, where can i get a new one. or if mine is safe to use despite having been rusty. I'll take better pictures of the wheel and post them in this thread so you guys can see what I'm talking about.

Anyway, I'm excited to be a part of this forum, and look forward to getting by bike back together for this spring. Thanks, Ned.

Welcome, it looks like you are inspired to do whatever it takes to get this project on it's way, I commend you ;D
My guess is that the rim is a 16" drop center harley davidson. you might consider replacing it with a shiney new one if you want to stay with a fat tire.

Welcome Aboard,

Are yor pipes good.. no holes ??

Are they marked HM 300?

Your headlight ears have been changed, maybe only because they are chromed.. or? ..check for other damage

Hello again. The pipes are not good, unfortunately. two of them are quite holy, I'll toss up some pics of them later.
Where would i find the mark on the pipes?

I didn't realize the headlight ears have been changed.

What damage do you recommend i look for? I'm stripping the bike down right now, so it would be good to know what to look for.

thanks, Ned.

Welcome :)

Only the early K0's had painted headlight ears, yours look right to me.

If it's a 17" wheel, it could be from a 77 or 78.

Mystic, 71 still had painted ears..

They usually get changed, because of damage if you fell down, or sometimes just to have chrome ones.. but these ones are 73 and later..

Pies are marked near the joint of muffler to pipe , i think.

I'm a SOHC newbe also. After getting my bike running I discovered a previous owner had a drive chain break and it punched a rather large hole in the engine case. HERE The hole was "halfassed" repaired with fiberglass mesh and epoxy.
It would be a shame for you to restore your CB750 and have that to contend with later. As I understand, not an uncommon problem.

Check for bent forks or changed out to newer stuff, if it rode straight, it is pobably fine.

The case damage Aet mentioned, is one of the first trhings I look for, but of course that depends on what the price of the bike is.

Art , if you can find a good tig welder , you can fix the cases.

Yes, definitely repairable but I believe would require a total teardown that I'm really not wanting to do since the engine is in great condition otherwise.

When I saw that pic, I had the vision of a rider going through the windshield of the Beemer and ending up like that!

I am glad to know that it was there on purpose!

hi guys. so i have totally stripped my bike, i think im going to start modifying the frame soon. I want to take off the passenger peg/exhaust bolts and de-tab the rest of the frame. I also want to strengthen it, because i bought the front end from a 94 zx-9r that i want to put on the bike. i know there are some threads that specifically talk about frame mods, so i need to look into that.

I'll toss up pictures of the front end soon, its pretty sweet. I'm also going to create a thread in the project forum. i may also take some pictures of the exhaust this weekend, someone asked me if they were marked HM 300. i dont know where to find that mark. They are pretty rusty, and i was going to just cut off the ends, but if someone wants to buy them, pm me.

I hope to at least have the bike rideable again by march, we'll see how that goes. I look forward to working with everyone  :)
