Newbie from Malaysia CB750F2 Supersports
« on: October 15, 2008, 08:09:22 PM »
Hi All. Came across this website by chance and thought I need to belong to a group who knows more about my CB750 than I do. So, it give me great pleasure to be part of the group and I hail and resides in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. If you have never been to Malaysia, it is perpetual summer all year round  ;D.

I have always had a passion for all things iconic and vintage and as such have always yearned for a CB750 over the last 30 years. I recently bought my 1978 CB750F2 and started riding again. There are not many CB750 on the Malaysian roads and as such, you can imagine a lone rider like myself most of the time.

My CB is currently in pieces, undergoing a full restoration and hope to finish it by mid of Nov 2008. Once done, I will upload some pictures of before and after and detail out what has been done.

Cheers to All  :)

Warmest regards
Patrick

Welcome Patrick,........ from Canada........where it's soon to be snowing  >:(   ;D ;D

Check out the website @ www.sohc4.net. I found some cool articles posted there a while back that are period magazine write ups about the 77 750F (virtually the same as your 78). Have some good info about the F2 and comparison to the Suzuki GS750 - the rival at the time.

...and you can't wait till you're done to post pics. soon us North Americans will be putting our bikes away for winter and will need pictures to occupy us over the winter.  :D

Hi Guys

Thanks for the welcome note. Sorry I took so long to reply cos I was having some problem locating the REPLY button  ???. In any case, have been in communicado with Matt over the last couple of days.

Hey, you sound like you have been to Malaysia? Have you? Well, riding in Malaysia is not exactly a dream, exotic maybe but surely not a dream. The road users here really don't give much regards to bikers and the roads are quite riddled with undulating terrain and potholes. And yes, it is very hot to ride. We just had the Motor GP yesterday and they register 47 C on the tarmac!!! The racers were using ice-packs on their neck just to stay conscious  ;D.

Most of my parts have arrived and work on my CB750 should be resuming soon  ;D. Well, you guys take care and safe riding always.

Patrick

Thanks M8.

Need some advice on the restoration. The painted suggested that the frame br finished in gloss black but I rather fancy semi-gloss. The painter's rationale is oil spills etc will be easier to clean off a gloss surface. The 2nd advise is what semi gloss/flat black paint would you recommend for the engine? Hot paint?

Hi Pat,

You're best off posting your technical questions in the tech forums where more people will veiw it here: http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?board=2.0

I've seen your questions asked here before so there also maybe an answer in here for you. Type frame paint or engine paint into the search line at the top of the page and see what comes up.

At any rate, most people powder coat their frames on here, but not sure whether gloss or semi-gloss black.

Engine paint is another story.... since the F's are black, you really only need to find a good high-heat engine enamel.

I used VHT Brake caliper paint on my 350F's engine and It's worked great. However, I painted the engine piece by piece and cured each piece in an oven. Not sure if the stuff will stick without curing.

Welcome to the forum from a fellow 750F owner.

I have mine in bits and pieces ready for paint as well....  I'm terribly behind on my project but hope to get in some good garage time this winter.

Welcome from New York USA. I am a fellow 1978 CB750 owner. The original frame paint was gloss black.

But we were boys, and boys will be boys, and so they will. To us, everything was dangerous, but what of that? Had we not been made to live forever?

Thanks Guys for the feedback on the paint. Will check out the tech forum to see what has been done before. In any case, I just sent the frame, front & rear shocks, triple tree and rear axle to be ovenbaked painted Gloss Black for everything except for the triple tree & rear axle in flat black. The mechanic wouldn't let me lay hands on the engine as it is all in pieces so I guess he will have to hot paint it for me flat black.

Can't wait to get my CB750 back  ;D

I also just got an F and I'm in LA so it's good riding weather all year for me too.  All the best with the resto.

Hi Bobby R. Good to know yours is also a 78 CB. I assume its also an F2 Supersports. Have you done anything to it yet? I have owned my for about 9 months now and is still discovering the bike and CB750 in general. Please share your experience/knowledge. :)

Hi Uncrash

Wow, your rebuilding of the CB looks very involved! I am sure it'll all be worthwhile in the end. The rebuilding of my CB750 is mostly done by a mechanic  ;D and I only do the "supervision" and part sourcing bit. Quick question: With the Cafe handlebar, would it make the steering that much more difficult, heavy and vibrates?

Thanks for the welcome and look forward to your finish :)

Yes, the clubman bars will make the bike turn heavier.  I'm not sure I'll leave them long term but I got them with a parts bike I picked up so I'll try them out and see.

I do like how they look.  If they kill my wrists and make the bike turn like a slug, I'll pick up a set of superbike bars.

I know what you mean when you said that the cafe handle bar looks good  ;D. My mechanic told me that it is a #$%* to ride with it though that is why I was trying to confirm this. In any case, I have bought a new Norton US Spec Commando handle bar for my CB but have yet to install it as everything is in bits. This new handlebar is approximately 1.5 inch lower, 2 inch wide and 2 inch more pullback than the original CB. The important thing to note is the centre width should be at least 5 inch on the straight useable length as the handle bar clamps' end to end is 5 inch. I was originally toying with the super bike handle bars but can't find any with the centre wider than 4.7/8 inch. This Commando handlebars have a 5.1/4 centre width whereas the UK spec version has a 4.3/4 centre width.

Once I have installed the handle bar next week or so, I'll let you know if the ride position is better than the stock CB set-up.

Give me 2 weeks and will post pix and write-up of what's done. I am also very curious to see what it'll look like on the CB750  ;D
