Winter passtimes
« on: October 26, 2008, 04:09:15 PM »
With winter coming on, I am curious as to what everyone else will be doing with their spare time.

I have a laundry list of projects in the house that I will be doing starting with cleaning off my desk and organizing it (gulp!) so that it will stay that way.

Does anyone have experience with those do-it-yourself basement dewatering systems?  Can get them from Menards or Lowe's and basically they work like an inside gutter.

I also plan on cooking a whole lot more than I have been... Chilli anyone?

Lastly, I'm gonna finish my online course work.

Let'er rip all, I'm looking forward to hearing from you.

I can identify with the long list of projects around the house, but they seem to be year-round here. Currently repainting the upstairs bath. The livingroom needs repainting also, but that one will be more involved because of a lot of packing books, etc. to move some wall units. That one will wait until after the holidays. I hope to chase down some oil drips on the bike and if time permits, re-establish a darkroom. I have a 4x5 enlarger that needs a home. ;) Good luck with reorganizing the office area and keeping it that way.. it never worked for me. ;D

Lists for me are made with good intentions, but I seldom stick to them. What should I do this winter? Where do I begin: swap out the bodged cylinder head on Sophie and replace the leaking o-rings; get the Commando ready to ride; tart up the XT even more, or sell it; put stainless brake lines on the KLX; actually start on putting the CB175 back together.

What will I do: drink beer and watch DVDs

Basement? What's a basement? Inside gutter? With 8" annual precip. who needs outside gutters?

I rode the bike to town and back today, so it can't be winter yet.

 ;) ;D

The truck has had the guts beat out of it for 3 full seasons and could at least use some rings before next year...

The bike doesn't leak much with the breather hooked up right - might put that one off another year...

There is a pile of insulation in the garage that needs to get put up in the shop and covered with sheetrock...

It would be nice to get the trans. in the Scout fixed before the snow gets too deep...

... but the garage roof needs to get finished first.

Since I'm a house painter and don't work in the winter (we collect unemployment) I will be volunteering full time at a museum at the University of Iowa.

I am planning on reading some of the Russians.  Winter always seemed like the best time to dive into Tolstoy or Dostoevsky.  I am also going to be building 2 more bookshelves because being married to an English Ph.D student means that you have stacks of books laying around.

I'd also like to clean up some of the wiring on the bike.  Wire in the turn signals, figure out why the tail light doesn't work, clean it up, maybe try and build some rearsets.

Im planning on tearing down my CB750 and taking most of it to the basement to finish it up before Spring. (I dont have a garage). Im going to replace the headgasket, check out the pistons and head, polish the sidecovers, and valve cover, and paint the jugs black. That alone should keep me busy for a month.

Where are you at in Iowa, Donny.

If we have another winter like we did last year, you'll have plenty of time to watch the house deteriorate.

I gotta winterize my garage so that I can work in there year around.  Right now, by late to mid-December it will be colder than a witch's tit and I won't want to work outside at all, bike or no-bike.

Any thoughts on heating a single car garage?  Kerosene, wood, or LP?  I'm fairly busy at work so I'm thinking that chopping wood is not an option...

I resigned from 15 years of coaching varsity wrestling, so this will be the first time since I was 6 years old that I won't be in the wrestling room from Oct. through March.  I plan on using my new found extra time to: fly-fish for wild trout and steelhead, snowshoe and ski, and whatever else I feel like getting into.  I may also fit some rearsets to the Hot Rod!
