Winter Storage
« on: October 28, 2008, 05:14:54 AM »
How do older bikes like to be stored for the winter months. I have a 76CB550. Battery, fuel system etc.

Tank full with stabilizer, carbs drained, battery stored inside on a tender. Throw a bedsheet over it to keep the dust off and you're done. That way you can throw the battery in every once in a while and take it for a quick spin.

If you are definitely not riding it...then throw in a fresh oil and filter change, and park it on some carpet.

I'm sure others will chime in their process too...

Good call Dennis, you about summed up the overwinter and storage thread in the FAQ.

Here's the link for those interested:

...All I will add is that if you store your bike in a rural setting like I do.......than you run the possibility of rodents (mice) free riding on/in your ride overwinter.

I think I'll pull the seat off and keep it indoors with the battery and possibly close up some holes in the bike...like the air intake.

I might also try some fogging oil, which I use on two-strokes but haven't heard if members use it on these bikes.....

.....so heres my question: what the consensus on the use of fogging oil?

 Matt.

You want consensus on an oil question? ::)
 ;)

Fog oil is dandy stuff and I'd use a lot more of it if my machinery was stored in a humid climate.

Not really an issue out here in the desert.

Happy trails.

I forgot about the rodent factor Matt. Actually in the last couple of nights I have caught 2 mice in my garage so I should likely follow your advice this winter too! And I am not exactly in a rural setting...

BTW where do you store it Matt? I seem to recall that you live downtown....or am I wrong?
