My 74 only slips in second gear and no others, what could this be?

It may just not be shifting correctly into gear. I dont know how often you change your oil but that could help. Otherwise check you clutch cableadjustment to make sure it is not too tight. If those are ok, then you may have something starting to wear in the tranny.

I just had this same issue but mine was slipping out of fourth. For me it turned out to be an easy fix. I removed the shift mechanism cover and noticed that one of the return springs which holds the shift mechanism in place had not been installed properly and thus was not supplying sufficent pressure. It was a simple matter of re-installing the spring correctly and the problem was solved. Hopefully your problem is as simple to solve. I was told on this forum that worn dogs are the most likely cause of gear slippage.
