so some may have seen earlier threads were i was kicking around how exactly to degree the cam of a 550 ("i heart megacycle")

so finally figuring out how its (suppose to be) done. i started kicking around other ideas of things to do while the motor is out and open (again)
  read alot of threads on boring, porting ,big bore, cam advance,and so on

i'm not totally sold on punching out the jugs, i would love to do it but its strictly a money issue, first thing is the head

May want to ask around. On the head for my CB750 project the machinist tapered the guides into the porting process. Of the part that hangs into the port, all 4 of my intake guides have been worked on. Maybe that's OK in your case too, unless you cracked it or such.

Now that i think of it, he just took a little meat off the sides of the guides, none off of where the sideload of the valve might be, that's where your touch appears to be.

Taking some of the guide off doesn't necessarily mean you need a valve job. I've ground the exposed part of the guide right off many times. I've posted a pic for an example

So, would you recommend doing the same on a 550 head? I did the same thing Spikey, they're hard to avoid with the bigger bits.

so does any one know if aftermarket valves for the 550 even exist , all i can find is stock valves

I recall seeing those valves in another thread as well. They're very nice valves, I'm tempted to pick some up... They're not that much more than going with Honda valves either, so it definitely wouldn't hurt to go with those.

now some may be wondering why i haven't removed any of the old paint, normally that is one of the first steps ....  but i thought having the paint there would make it a little easier  to do this.

My neighbor used a belt sander and fine grit paper to do the fins on his DR650. If I were to do that I'd sand em smooth.... lol.

i used an angle grinder with a fine grit flap wheel, then a scotchbrite type wheel, then the polishing wheels on the bench grinder , wasn't that hard

..I was gonna say what Mike said about the valve guide. Mine are cut down on the intake side on my 350F, but it has a much smaller port.....or at least it did 

If you've read the other forums than you know not to go too smooth on the intake ports to allow for a bit of turbulence for mixing. It looks like those intake runners are about right to me

yeah i ran out of projects and had this head laying around my garage . so i said to myself "yeah, you might as well"   

now i definitely gotta take the jugs off to at least polish the fins

so when i polish the intake valves, do i want to go all the way to a mirror finish , or am i just smoothing out any imperfections in the metal.
