more newbie questions

If the numbers from the frame tag and the engine numbers are different does this mean the engine has been replaced?
I see You guys referring to k1 k2 and various other designations, what's the system?
What's the consensus on crash bars?
more to come as I go.

The No's on the frame V's the engine will always be different by about a few hundred. Very unusual to get any only a few digits off (Although there have been some reported)
The K, and the F's are derived from your frame no. and are based on the first half of the serial no. CB750-XXX1234.
come back here with the No. in full and someone here will let you know the Year of manuf / Model ...K0, K1..etc.

Oh...and I hate crash bars. But that's just my opinion. (Maybe unless they are all new & shiney.)

Check your frame number against the lists here:  http://sohc4.us/?q=node/7

Engine bars:  Had them in 1979 (see avatar), don't use them now, never "tried them out"

my thaughts on crash bars are not the pritiest item but a good insurance slow speed tumble will protect the points cover and alternator cover so you pays your money and take your choice

on a cb750 the small case guards are invaluable, on the smaller bikes they tend to do as much harm as good with chipped cylinder fins when they bend. I had a 65mph laydown with my cb750 and that bike still runs mint today because of case guards, otherwise I would have cracked the case for sure.

This site has a good writeup on the different models, I suggest you search around a little and read as much as you can.

BTW, whaty bike do you have?

Thanks for the help guys so I figure it to be cb 750 k3.
Her is a picture of the bike, it sure is ugly but the potential is there.
The wiring needs to be redone and a the cosmetics other wise in good enough shape for what it cost.

Its not ugly man!  All I see is potential.  Get some nice paint on it and badges and youll be styling!  Looks like the chrome and pipes are in good shape?  Hey at least the PO didnt put ape hangers, a big stupid windjammer and sissy bar on it...then itd be ugly!

looks to be a good start, I've seen worse. The case gaurds you have are the big ugly across the frame jobbies that I usually throw in the back of the shed. They are plenty strong but big, heavy, and cumbersome. Instead see if you can find the smaller two piece case guards that just use the outer engine mounts. they will get the job done and if you paint them black or satin silver most people won't notice them. I have a black set on a supersport and nobody ever sees them.

When I laid my cb750 down the case guard bent all the way back and only dented the points cover which cost me $10 (plus $30 for another set of guards). On the cb750 there is no way for the guard to bend back and hit the cylinder, but on the 550s and smaller the bars stick out enough to impact the jugs when bent back. For the smaller bikes I don;t recomend them, but for a cb750 I always recomend them.

Hey there, I too see its potential, the chrome is in great shape one little ding in the front fender and the pipes are nice and bright.
The only rust is at the joint between the head pipes and the mufflers, that should be easy enough to fix and it looks like the top left muffler tip got flexed a little but You cant see it unless you roller nose the bike.
I am stoked, I do auto body work for a living so the cosmetics will come out nice in time, of course getting the bike road worthy is top priority.

I had crash bars on my 400, they caused so much bloody damage to the engine and frame at less than 20mph :-[ if I had not fitted them it would have cost me 10 quid for a  alternator case from the scrap yard, the two point fixing one's suck on smaller bikes Merv, like I already wrote...enjoy them but dont fall off!  :o

hi super sport although thease are two point they can not bend back a lot third pipe if they bend back it will contact the crank case and stop furthur bending more for when the old girls parked than when im riding (all i could find still looking for a 3 point set one day)
