Are all wheel bearings created equal?
« on: October 29, 2008, 12:11:54 PM »
So, are all wheel bearings created equal? I mean, I have found Wheel bearings (new) on ebay for under $4 per set. The same size bearings can be bought from Honda for $12 or higher a peice. So, would I be fine with buying the cheaper bearings, or do I need one from the manufactorer?

The Honda bearings are only sealed on one side. I think many of us (me too) prefer the bearings that are sealed on both sides. They seem to last longer at least, don't know about rolling quality. I've seen them at Honda prices and slightly more.

They are totally common standard bearings. Look for a local bearing supplier. Get name brand double sealed (both sides) bearings in the standard tolerance (usually E3 for electric motor use). Double sealed is usually 62xx-2RS, if it's 62xx-ZZ that's just a dust shield and not a proper seal. The bearing number can be found on a list here in the archives somewhere or just take the old one out and look for the number, it's a 6202 or something similar.
SKF, FAG, NTN... good brand names. I don't KNOW about cheaper China made stuff but I like to stick to known good brands. They may be made in some oddball country, but if FAG puts their name on it it is almost certainly good.
For online ordering I've had super good experiences with Boca Bearings. Their website is mostly about skateboard and model race car bearings but they have everything. Don't bother going nuts with expensive ABEC 7 bearings.

+1

Youv'e heard the phrase "you get what you pay for" haven't you.
At 80 MPH I'd feel much safer knowing I'm rolling on quality bearings.

I would recommend following Bodi"s advice.A bearing house is your best bet for price and quality.Bearings are their business and they know it well. The only bearings I would source from Honda are the ones with locating grooves that are found in the engines.I have not been able to find them anywhere else.   Rock On
