Side cover colour??
« on: September 19, 2005, 12:29:37 AM »
Should the plastic side covers on a 1976 CB750 F1(UK bike) be the same colour as the tank paint?
Mine are painted black, but looks like there is red underneath the black. If they should be red, does anyone know what paint is a match for the Honda red?

Jim, to the best of my knowledge, the UK F1 had black sidepanels.

Tho' these people can't seem to make up their minds!

Steve,
I wonder how standard my bike is?? It seems to have different tank decals to other 76 F that I have seen pics of!! Mine does not have the black infill in between the pin stripe lines on the tank, also I have raised badges on the tank, others seem to have flat decals on the tank!! Of course, mine could be original and theirs not!?

Both of my '76 750F's have VERY DARK GRAY metallic painted side covers (the red one still has the original factory paint).  The tank badges are diecast metal, gold color with black background, and the RED bike has a gold color "SUPER SPORT" decal directly under the tank badges.  If you have a yellow bike, the decal is black.  You can see a few pics of my "mostly original" '76 750F at: http://home.mindspring.com/~highvoltage/www/
The red bike is the one I'm talking about.
Regards, Steve F.

If you have badges that say "Honda" with "Super Sport" beneath as a decal then you have the proper arrangement. If your badges say "Honda" with "Super Sport" as part of the badge then your badges or tank are from a '77-"78F.

My dacals are raised, plastic(I think) all one piece, black background, gold letters, saying Honda with Super sport underneath.

Steve D,
Do you know Gordon Farley Honda chap at Ash, is he OK? He can service the bike all up plugs, oil etc for 150 pounds, does this sound reasonable?
As usual the mechanic 'sucked his teeth' and said "that adjusting the cam chain tension was a right bugger" Is this true?
Cheers,
Jim.

It's easy - but only if you know how and have done it a few times, which a modern Honda mechanic will not have done...

Post a good close-up of the decals and let the experts here advise.

Sorry - don't know Gordon Farley but from what I'm reading, you should get a couple of good manuals and do it yourself one weekend!

Jim Nothing dificult on the 750 to service I used to do them in 2 hours start to finish as long as parts are to hand so if you say 6 for you first time. You will need good quality 3/8 drive six sided sockets plus an impact screwdiver and ordinary srewdriver, feeler gauges  and a test lamp that you can make yourself
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

sounds like you have 77-78 bodywork on a 76. It's not uncommon, for a while I had a 78 tank on my 76 and then a tank painted in custom colors in the factory scheme. 1975-76 cb750F sidercovers are gray charcoal metallic (eastwood makes a good paint for this, at least in my opinion, not dead on but super close) with a real disco era looking 750Four emblem. The supersport on the tank should be a decal and the bike should have pinstriping not a crecent shaped design on the tank sides.

Give these guys a call.

They came to my house with a fully fitted Transit van and replaced the Avon Roadrunner on the rear of my 500 (100/90-18) for £76 all in.

He had to remove both right hand silencers to get the wheel out!

90/90-19 on the front sounds about right to me.
What tyre are you going for? As I said, Avons on the 500, Pirelli Phantoms on the 550.

Roadrunners are fine. You'll get a different view from each person on this site as to the best tyres. A front/rear match is good too.
