Black or Chrome?
« on: September 22, 2005, 05:03:15 PM »
I bought this bike not for its appearance but because it was mechanically sound and the price was pretty good. The previous owner repainted it including blacking most of the chrome. I personally don't like it as much as shiny chrome, but a lot of people around here think it looks better this way. What do you think, should I ditch the engine black? If so, any suggestions on the best way to do that?

I think I'd add the polished engine cover kit, and polish the edges of the cooling fins, looks good... nice seat too.

I hadn't thought of just doing the fiins' edges, that might be a good look.

Pretty cool but I agree, the completly black engine doesnt grab the eye as it should.  I agree with Alan too as far as sanding/polishing the edges of all the fins.  It creates a very cool conrast effect and pulls your attention.  Id do the tappet covers, alternator, points cover and mufflers too.  Brake fluid will probably take it off really easy but if you decide to do that remove the parts you wanna strip.  Nasty stuff!  Get some drag bars too.  Just my .02 take it or leave it.  Later!

That's what my '82 650 looks like... Blacked out engine with headers and points/alternator covers chromed.  Course, it's got black sidecovers (one of which I lost on the interstate) and a burgundy tank...  Hey, it's a work in progress dammit!

But it still gets compliments every now and then. ;D

Don't know about chrome the tips of the fins.  Might look trashy if you don't get it just right.

Thanks for all the input. I'll mull it over during the winter but right now I'm leaning toward polishing the covers and probably the pipes and maybe the fins. How's that for definitive? I just noticed the black on one of the side covers is already wearing off from my boot rubbing against it, so now there's one glaring silver spot in all that black. It's gotta go one way or the other, it looks like crap on a plate with it that way.  :-\

Course, it's got black sidecovers (one of which I lost on the interstate)

I drilled a small hole in the top of my side covers, just out of site, and fixed a small cable tie through it and round the frame under the seat. Don't want to lose another side cover.
