Have you ever messed with one of those "one time use video camcorders" that CVS offers? The original idea is that you "rent" one for about $30.00. It gives you about 20 minutes of digital video. Then you have it "developed" for an additional $12.00, and get the video on a DVD.
Like most electronic devices, it can be hacked. There's even a forum devoted to hacking those and a similar digital still camera. They offer info on making a cable, where to obtain the software needed, and mods like the removal of a filter like you describe. And it runs on standard AA batteries! Their forum even offers a place to post videos like we might take on our motorcycles, or sending one up in a model plane or rocket.
