"Built to tight racing specifications" as we see a wrench wacking away at a muffler with a hammer! Imagine the mayhem in a modern race if push starts were allowed. And the outcry of the racers if all they had for trackside protection was armco and hay bales! Got to love the good old days!

That looked like Steve Baker, the rider, working on his own bike, not something you see today at that class of racing. The push start was because American riders didn't 'bump start' race bikes like British riders, I think that was the compromise.
I was there that day too, Mallory Park just down the road from me.

That's just great stuff Superbiker.

malcolmgb what year is this? I see a young Randy Mamola and Wes Cooley so it must be late seventies.

I was thinking '77, but a little puzzled about Randy Mamola being there then.
I had another thought about the push start shown, that was probably for the warm up laps, cold slick tyres, but there was an issue over race starts.

I'm fairly certain that's Mamola...so I wouldn't have fiqured him to be invited as early as  77, Cooley maybe. It's probable Baker was there in 79 but he had lost his ride with Yamaha by then.

It's a mystery!  ;D Very cool video.

Could be '79 then, I have been told the Suzukis are in the 1978-1981 colours, and Mamola was riding a 750 in '79. Now I'm confused about Steve Baker being there, he lost his Yamaha ride at end of '77 and had stopped racing by '79.
