Front Disc Brake Shim (CB650)
« on: September 23, 2005, 10:50:00 AM »
I ran into the old "front disc brake won't release" problemo.  So, I've dis-assembled, clean, re-assembled and re-installed my front disc brake assembly, together with new pads. I'm wondering if I have the shim in wrong, tho.

When disassembling, it appeared as tho the lip of the shim hooked into the pin clip. (the pin clip being the clip that keeps the Brake Pad Retaining Pins in place).  So I re-assembled it that way.  But the net result is that the bottom of the shim travels with the cylinder and pad, while the top stays in place with the Pin Clip.

This doesn’t make sense to me, and the front brake is behaving badly… but the Clymer Manual (which I hate) seems to indicate this is the correct way to install.

Anyone know about this shim?

Hi Bil
The wire retaining clip does not touch the shim, the pad retaining pins pass through pads and shim and the wire clip simply holds the pins in place, which in turn is held in place by the inspection cover. You mention the Clymer manual, I have the Haynes manual which shows the shim behind the inner pad and the text mentions the inner as well, mine was behind the outer pad and always has been the impression of the piston can clearly be seen on the shim, perhaps another member has some thoughts.

Coolio!

I pulled the shim off the clip, and let it rest on the pad.  It brakes real nice, now.

I'm throwing the manual in the trash.

Thanx for the help!
