Tank full of goo?

I'm having a good hard look at the 82 CB650C Custom I bought about a fortnight ago, I've tried just riding it but it has more issues than I can diagnose on the side of the road.
I had noticed a reluctance for the fuel to flow when I put the tank on reserve so decided to take tank off and have a wee look.
Oh my God!
The last owner must have run this poor bike on cow dung, that's the consistancy of the gunk and goo that I coaxed out of the tank.
The in tank filter was so clogged I wonder the bike actually ran as well as it did.
I know in the states you guys have some wonderful chemicals to remove this stuff from tanks but on making enquiries here I'm told water/detergent and then clean gas is all we should be using.
Check out the crap that came out of the tank in the pictures....i humbly apologise to Kitsune for doubting the need for a filter. :(

that goo in the bottom picture looks a little copper-patinaish.  ??? i've seen filters look that bad (sounds like you're testament to they're doing their job), but not the greenish goo. don't know what in the tank would corrode that way, but it sure looks like oxidized copper.

Toilet bowl cleaner will take poo out of tanks.  It was designed for that.  ::)

+1 on that, anything with muratic acid as well..

concrete cleaner comes to mind.

Coat tank immediately after washing out to prevent rust though.
2 stoke oil, wd40, marvels, seafoam, gas, whatever... just get it coated with something that will keep air from touching bare metal.

if you go the muriatic route, i'd suggest plugging the gas fill hole with one of those adjustable plumbing stoppers available at your (hopefully) local hardware store

The long greenish thing is actually an insect of some kind that fell out of the tank.
The PO told me he had been using Aviation gas, I thought he was joking!!!

A the risk of drawing attention from the Homeland folks:  Gasoline + alum (aluminum oxide) + water, shake vigorously = gelled gasoline (napalm).  To strengthen the jelly, add small amount of styrene (a few foam cup chips) ;D

Obviously, this can happen completely without intention under some circumstances.

Nah only joking but careful a noobie might just be silly enough to clear tank/backyard/entire block with that method. ;D
