after 14 years or so, i'm using a different web browser
« on: November 06, 2008, 06:28:48 PM »
i have been having LOADS of problems with IE lately, when trying to go to a different site, the memory usage would go to 100% and lock everything up till the page loaded and other nonsense like that. an engineer/it friend told me to try firefox, i did and i love it!

Yea, he is right, go with FF or Safari or something else.  If you insist on using IE, always have a second browser as backup.  When IE get hit with spyware/malware, chances are it will not effect the other browsers and you can get on the Internet to download a spyware/malware removal tool.  At least be able to do some research.

If you have Outlook, not Outlook Express, sometimes you can get to the Internet using the web feature when IE is thrashed.

I use FF and Safari.  I like the built in spell check.  It is not the best but much better than none.

Problem arises when you start adding add-ons to firefox. If your running windows for a fun little test download sysinternals process explorer tool and start it. Then pull up IE (please say its 7 w/ secure settings) then start firefox w/ all your fav plug-ins (IE: no script etc etc). Get a couple tabs running on both then go back to process explorer and look at working mem and virtual mem. On every test system firefox is using 3x the resources as IE in my tests. Not saying IE7 is the best browser but when configured correctly and browsing intelligently you should run into very few issues. For example my everyday machine I use IE7 but I dont really deviate from my normal sites. Now on my... shall we say questionable system I use firefox w/ a few interesting add-ons but this system is a vm image and every time I boot it comes up as a clean state (IE: when I shut down all changes are removed).

Remember a lot of the add-ons for firefox that you think are so great are wrote by some peep w/ no link to firefox. Like browsing you need to use good judgement.

If your using safari on a windows system you have lost all desire to browse w/ a sense of security. Apple is at the stage Microsoft was at 10 years ago in regards to informing clients of security flaws and actually releasing patches. Hell your probably better off running chrome or something.

As you see more browser come on the market like firefox, safari and chromo that are backed by large company's you are going to see peeps flock to find the flaws. Then again sometimes it doesnt even matter when you look at things like click jacking.

I don't have any trouble with Add-ons.  Obviously if you go around installing all the screen-saver/web-caster/news-feeder bits you'll slow things down but that's more a universal truth than a flaw in Firefox.

Go here:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/recommended

get Adblock plus, IE tab, and flashblock.  Read the description for stumbleupon - that is some cool s**t if you're into web surfing.

StumbleUpon used to be the chit until ebay bought.  They messed it all up.  StumbleUponExtreme (SUE) is gone, no more themes.  A few select few can still get it running but the thrill is gone.

Now for people like BobbyR and a few others, for that stuff, it is prolly the best add-on for that.

That's too bad.  Old SU was really fun.

here's a little analogy for you... one which i consider to be spot on.

IE is like having sex w/out a condom... Firefox is like having protected sex.

IE will let anything and everything thru, set your controls on firefox correctly and nothing gets thru.  that is the major problem w/ IE... just does not protect its base.

Little bit of a hijack, but what do you guys use as your start page?  I've been using Igoogle and it lets me aggregate all of the things I like to read and keep up on (including this forum) all on one page.

IE is good for old people! :D
Firefox is faster and more secure. It is just as easy to use. If you are still stuck using firefox 2, then you will have memory issues, supposedly even though I never did.

Move to the new firefox 3.1 beta. Yes beta. I have been using it for about a month now on xp AND vista and it has been flawless. I have not have excessive ram usage either. Plus it integrates well with AVG. Please tell me you people are NOT paying for anti-virus software when there is better stuff for free! Couple these along with malwarebyte's Antimalware program and spyware terminator (for xp) or superantispyware and you have good protection.

I'm using FireFox and have had no issues.  The home page I use is in my signature area.
