caliper piston wont budge TRIED EVERYTHING
« on: November 05, 2008, 05:30:15 PM »
title says it, the pad is broke off the steel backing to pad is still in there. i tried the grease gun trick and since the arent matching threads it pulled the first two threads of the greasr gun i picked them out and moved to the compressor rigged up some fittings to get air in it, tried 75 then 100 then 125(max on my compressor). wouldnt budge so i put 125 to it and started whacking it. nutin. i put it back ont the brake line bled out the brakes and standing on the brake lever and it wont move. i then cut into the caliper housing on the bottome of it so i could get at the steel backing prying at it with the brake lever being squeezed by my brother and it wont budge... cut it in half with acetalyne and get a new one??? i have about had it.

oh it sat in penetraing oil for three days prior to this

Are you trying to save the piston or the caliper?  Did I read your post correctly, you cut into the caliper?

Pistons are fairly easy to replace, the caliper not so much.  If you have ruined the caliper, you might as well abandon it and start looking for a replacement with a moving piston.

Get a new (or functioning used) one.

Don't mess around with brakes - they gotta work right every time.

Unscrew the fitting on the end of your grease gun, thread the stem into the brake line hose in the caliper (it'll only grab a couple of threads because it's the wrong pitch, but it's good enough) and then pump the caliper fill of grease.  Piston will come out.

Air is compressable.  Grease, not so much.

Ah, saw that in your original post you'd already tried the grease gun trick.

Personally I'd buy a different caliper at that point.  Not worth taking chances with it, as others have already said.

That said, I'd totally understand an obsessive compulsion to get that MF out of there no matter what it takes, just for the principle of the thing.  I've been there myself :)  Bake it in the oven maybe?  Better yet, freeze it, then try the grease gun trick while it's still nice and cold.

Have you tried pushing it in with a press or a bottle jack? Once it breaks free it'll come out a bit easier with grease.

Screw one of those body hammers into it and bang away.

Had exact same problem
A correct thread bolt, copper washer and some heat worked real well for me.

Think of all the time and effort expended and you are no closer to getting that piston out. Get a used one. If it won't come out with the master attached move on.

FYI That is why it is a good idea to cover the back to the pad with a light coat of anti seize.
Yep, i have issues with this sort of stuff.

 I didn't use grease gun.
I used an engine bolt with 10x1.25thread. Used extra long bolt so I could put a vice grips on it (and stood on them ;D)
Blocked everything solid so when I heated it up the fluid expanded and pushed piston out (like a cannon actually so its a good idea not to be studying for movement at close quarters) had it pointed into a box so I wouldn't have to hunt piston down in next doors yard.(only went about 6~10ft)
It was stupid and fun, that's why I tried it (hey ya'll, hold my beer and watch this  :D :D :D)
