Oil for 550

What type of oil do you guys recommend for a 75 550?  It's spring here and I usually don't ride the bike when its below 50 F.  Im running Penzoil 10W40 right now and have noticed clutch slippage when grabbin gears at high rpm with heavy throttle.  The clutch is adjusted properly.  The previous owner recommended Castrol 20w50 but I have a hell of a time findin it around here.  Any thoughts?

Check the Oil FAQ.  There's not much there (yet) but this is a very common question.

Anyone want to add to Harry's FAQ, just post as a reply and we'll sort it out (eventually)

GTX is a great oil. You don't need to run 20-50. 10-30 would be fine, and so long as you ride it in warm weather, you should have no problems.

Yeah I made a big mistake in using it once before doing any research and the clutch slipped like crazy.  Mabey thats part of the problem now.  Mabey I could flush out the motor/trans with something like Seafoam?

Hey there, a couple of thoughts on oil. I leave it to you to decide whether to use dedicated motorcyle type oil for you bike but I strongly discourage you from using Penzoil.There's a reason that's what you get when you go to those 15 min. oil change places-its cheap and crap. Paraifin baed, not good. Castrol is great oil with Valvoline running a close second.

My '76 cb550f oil cap says use ONLY 10w40. I used to run Spectro 4 synth blend but it now costs too much. I've never noticed a problem with clutch slippage.

You can flush with diesel.

Yep -- Pennzoil is crap and leaves alot of black crusty stuff in the engine.

Be careful if you decide to use diesel or storebought motor flush -- if the engine has alot of that crusty stuff in there the flush might dislodge it -- and clog your oil pick up.

My suggestion if you want to get rid of the slippage would be to flush -- run your engine to warm, add motorflush, and let idle for about 5 minutes.  Drain oil, then drop oil pan -- then you can check/clean the screen and put her back together.

I use catrol or valvoline.
