Tailight help/questions
« on: February 12, 2009, 01:07:48 PM »
I am trying to figure out what to do for a rear brake light that will be flush mounted to my bubble style cafe seat.  That being said, I wanted to move away from the cicle lights that are commonly used, to something a little different.  However, lack of finding exactly what I am looking for, I am reconsidering the round light.  Here's my question...
I am looking for a dual filament, or led light that is roughly 2.5 to 3" in diameter, but want one that has a nice, round face when viewing from the side.  Most round lights that I find are flat faced.  The contour and roundness of my seat makes it very difficult to flush mount a light.  Does anyone have any suggestions? thanks

sorry for the bad pic, but it is the best shot of the rear tail that I have right now.

check this, around $60 from Custom Dynamics, brake, tail and signals you just need to spend another $10 on a LED compatible blinker module.

Its funny that you show that led set up.  That is the first route that I headed, and planned on cutting a thin slot around the back edge of the seat right above the rear frame rail, and inserting that led.  Unfortunaltely, I gave up as I was having trouble forming a plastic lens to cover the leds.
Maybe I will have to give it another go if I can't find a flush mount.

i'm kinda dealing w/the same thing actually
rounded rear end and planning on frenching a round brakelight into the back.

i'll have to dig up what i found (i'm at work now) but i believe there are rounded lights out there like you're talking about.

i'm planning on doing a rubber grommet type application to fit a flush mount light onto the rounded surface.
i have done nothing as of yet...still speculating and it's kinda cold here in ohio.

love to hear what others have to say about this too.

also, are there laws against running your license plate sideways off the frame or shock mounts? A buddy of mine told me you couldn't, but i think that's a load of crap.

I have done this for years and never been pulled over or hassled in Indiana.  That isen't to say it is legal and could be used as reasonable suspicion if they thought you were up to something else, or needed to fluff up a moving violation with some equipment citations.

hey mike thanks for the license plate info! i'll be on the lookout. i'm actually still trying to figure out my rear fender, so i may just include the plate on there...but good to know  8)

and squirley here's a couple of links i've been surfing on.

i did a shopwiki for "round tail lights"
http://www.shopwiki.com/search/round+tail+lights

off of there i liked some of the stuff on Siren Net
http://www.sirennet.com/led-brake-tail-turn.html?submenuheader=5

harrison specialties has some cool looking signal lights
http://www.harrisonspecialties.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=HS&Category_Code=Red

mini round brake/turn signal leds
http://www.amazon.com/Round-Mini-Stop-Brake-Lights/dp/B001E336P8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=automotive&qid=1234500057&sr=8-1 -- this has the grommet idea i was thinking of. i'd rather have a larger single light though

broad search for "led tail light" on amazon
http://www.amazon.com/s/qid=1234500339/ref=sr_nr_n_3?ie=UTF8&rs=15684181&keywords=led%20tail%20light&bbn=346333011&rnid=15690151&rh=i%3Aaps%2Ck%3Aled%20tail%20light%2Ci%3Aautomotive%2Cn%3A15684181%2Cn%3A346333011

also, i would imagine if you query amazon with the right terminology you'll be able to find the same exact Carpy stuff

hope some of this helps.
if anyone does see a larger (maybe 4 inch) round brake light w/rubber grommet...lemme know!
