Carb switch up
« on: October 14, 2008, 08:45:52 PM »
I am new to carbs and was given 8 carbs, some of them disassembled and none on the mounts. they are all the same kind for the bike. would it matter if i mix and match the ones in best shape to make a set of four for my bike, or do you have to have the four in set together. Any input from you guys would be greatly appreciated.

I would try to keep the slides matched up to the carb bodies but it really doesn't matter since you will have to set and synch them all anyway.  I woul djust wathc that you get them all in th eright position on the rack though; they all use thesame casting but they're all machined differently depending on their position.

With new parts, any same type part can go into any carb.  However, used parts tend to meld with their relational counter parts and fit best with whatever partner they had all these years.  To minimize wear in (and the march to wear-out), keep the parts in the same association.  Clearly, damaged parts shouldn't be reused.
You will also find out that each carb position is unique, even though they were all machined from the same casting.

Lastly, they may LOOK like they are the same carbs, but if their set up stampings on the carb bodies are different, they will have different internal parts.
