Removing scratches from windscreen?
« on: September 12, 2005, 08:54:25 AM »
Hi gang...recently installed a ( used) fairing for my 1978 CB550. Plexiglass has some scratches on it. What is the best way to reduce these scratches?  I know to stay away from paper products when cleaning it, only using white cotton towels. Any suggestions on products or techniques would be greatly appreciated.

I've never had to do it, but just tried asking my buddy Google a question and he came back with this (sorry, it's from a 4-wheel forum  :().

Wet sanding works very well on plexiglass.  I've done it many times on various fairings and helmet face shields, and they come out looking brand new.

I usually start with a 600 grit and work my way up to a 1500, then finish with a polishing compound.  Very smooth and shiny!

The best I have found is Kit Scratch Out. Makes plastic shine like new and removes 90% of the scratches with no residue. $3 a bottle at WalMart.

Gordon, you were right on with the Kit Scratch Out. 80-90% of the scratches were removed after 2 applications. Windscreen looks much better, Thanks.

BTW, Wal-Mart had it on sale for $1.92....made it an even better deal...LOL

It also worked on cleaning up the headlights on my car....cleared the plastic lens right up....

Another thing to remember is to never use glass cleaner on plastic , the ammonia eats through the plastic and turns it murky.

There are plenty of vinegar based glass cleaners available that won't damage plexiglass, or you can just use your own vinegar/water mixture.  And that was Grumburg who recommended the Scratch-Out kit, but I'm glad it worked well for you.

Step one: take windscreen and place in garage

Step two: enjoy beautiful scratch free unobstructed view with wind in your face as a motorcycle is meant to be

Kidding aside, Eagle one makes a really good plastic polish and protectant that I use on the soft windows of my Jeep. Works awsome. For heavy scratches you can feel with your fingernail I second the recomendation on scratch out: wet sand, polish and you are done. Also works great for the signal and brake lenses on your bike if you want them to look new.

DRMark: Glad to give the tip. I use it on my car windows too. Takes off the residue glass cleaner leaves behind. Beads like RainX and makes  the wipers glide.
