is tripoly something I'd have to order on the internet or is there somewhere that would carry it locally?

I know Harbor Freight carries various compounds.  Sears too.

I've found it at Sears, Northern Tool and possibly (can't recall for certain) local Hardware Hank or Ace...it's around.

Tonight I finished putting the carbs back together, painted the exhaust clamps and started polishing the master cylinder.

The Tripoli works great, I used the white compound I had from before to get all the rough stuff off and the Tripoli to get the shine going. Seems to be working well. Also bought two new wheels for the buffer.

On a side note I got a delivery yesterday of all my cables (throttlex2, clutch, tach, spedo) , the master cylinder rebuild kit, and spark plugs. Once I finish the stuff I'm on now I'll start tearing down the wheels to get them out to powder coat and I'll order new spokes for both..

Not sure what to do with the forks yet, I like the polished forks you posted but had intended on doing them satin black, not sure now...

For aluminum, pretty much all you need is some brown Tripoli....its for aluminum

If you get some stiffer buffing wheels and put them together on the same spindle (making a wider buff vs 1)
you can cut some time down....same goes with the softer ones.

Keep cleaning the wheels often - use a screwdriver or something....I use an old wire brush

I have yet to sand anything on my parts, and some/most were very nasty.   Let the compound do the work
and another tip - get some of those tight leather mechanics gloves....helps keep a grip on things.

Doubling up the wheels? What a great idea, done!

Doubling up the wheels? What a great idea, done!

What are you pointing out?  Doubling up?  Spoke pattern?  Do I need glasses?
Im getting ready to attack my wheels - cleaning them up, new spokes, etc., so if there is a better way, please explain
Thanks

Greenjeans suggested putting 2 buffing wheels side by side on the spindle of the polisher, giving much more coverage on a polish job. That's what I meant by "doubling up".

So I'm back and working on the bike .. Finished sanding down the fins on the motor . . . Have been polishing parts like the clutch cover and the trans cover from the left side of the motor.

Called a highly recommended shop today about getting the tank and side covers painted. The tank has a few dents in it that would have to be filled and I wanted to get it all painted solid satin black. The total cost start to finish for the 3 pieces was $700.. Is that reasonable? Haven't ever paid to get anything painted before.. Anyone have any shops around phoenix they recommend for a second estimate?

He did say I could easily get the powder coating i want for the wheels done for less than 50 a wheel. So that's good!

Will get some pics up soon.

The wheel quotes sound really reasonable.

The paint seems a bit high.  Any chance you could save some money by doing the stripping and bondo work yourself?

Also, are you going to line the inside of the tank?  If so, you might want to do that before you have it painted so you don't have to worry about getting any chemicals on the new paint job.

If you decide to line it, I recommend POR.  Avoid Kreem like the plague!

The paint price does seem a little high. But if they are a truly reputable shop and doing all the EPA stuff like they're supposed to, that may be the going rate these days.

I was quoted $450 from a top notch firm for my CB750 frame and $150 for the swingarm.

Compliance with painting laws is expensive.

Powder coating is cheap by comparison. A top notch firm would do my frame for $175. They've done thousands of frames.

BACK!!

and polishing : ( man its boring.

and I'm definitely not as good at it as some of you guys. I'm using white compound on a small wheel to strip it down and tripoly on a softer wheel to brighten it up... Seems ok i guess.

Getting the wheels off to the powder coater this week. Ordered new spokes and bearings for them tonight. Going to have the outters and hubs done satin black and leave the spokes with the silver finish they come in.

(the other outter is in the sandblasting cabinet.

Will post more pics soon. Expect to get the bike finished in the next month and a half or so.

You are making progress, don't get discouraged or take shortcuts. Polishing takes patience and beer can make it more tolerable.

Unless you are using a different type of compound than I'm used to, the white compound (sometimes called "white rouge", though not truly a "rouge") is the less aggressive compound of the two and should be used last.

good build!  Your patience is a virtue!  I think I would just powder coat EVERYTHING, forget the polishing!

Keep it up!

Got the rims back from powdercoat .. Came out great, very happy with them.

Laced them up with the new spokes and have them down at a local shop today to get them trued.
Here is a picture if the front wheel before I attached the last spoke .. and the back wheel when I finished it.

Also got started on the last 4 things to polish, forks , alt cover and tranny cover. The alt cover was painted black when I got it so its coming around.

Also going to try out this green compound for some final finish on the parts I've polished already .. Says light duty for metal so I assume it will give me a better shine than the white which is marked "medium" duty. I've no clue until I try it though.

tons of parts on order right now .. Will get more pics up as I start putting things back into the frame.
