It Lives!
« on: September 22, 2005, 09:06:09 AM »
...a "free" 1971 CB500K that I picked up a few months back, that is.  I did the usual fluids change, carb cleaning and ignition check. After
re-intalling the carbs and swapping in a battery from my CB400F, it started up!  8) Idle (tick over) was eratic but a carb synch solved that. Now it idles (tick over) smoooooooths and revs cleanly. Sounds good, too.

I guess I should expect that from a one owner, California bike  with 8454 original miles. :)

It needs some more mechanical work. The front master cylinder needs to be flushed new fluid.A new clutch cable needs to be installed and the drive chain needs to be cleaned and oiled.

the chrome is cleaning up and the engine cases are polishing up nicely!

Gee..... do I paint it the very cool, original Jade Green and keep it?

Here's a picture of it the day I picked it up. Look much better, now!

Nice catch, that's practically a new bike! Around here, there's a lot worse stuff than that still being ridden to church.

If I keep hearing about people getting free Hondas I'm gonna start smashing things. Congratulations, and savor the moment you first hear her fire!

Well, than start smashing, man!  ;D The CB500 was part of a three bike "freebie". A 1970 Kawasaki dirt bike and a parts bike 1980 Yamaha dirt bike came with the free Honda.  :) The CB500 was the real jewel of the three.

Sorry to do this to you .....
About three years ago, someone asked me if I would be interested in a CB750 that had not run for many years. I replied yes, if the engine turned. One dark night about 5 weeks later a pick-up truck with a trailer unloaded my '75 CB750F in my driveway. It was running 3 weeks later.
Last year, at a local bike night while riding the "750" a gentleman approached me and asked "are you looking for any parts for that Honda?" I said not really but asked what he had in mind. He had a non-running '76 CB750F that he just wanted to "get rid of ...." heading for the dumpster if no one wanted it.
Today my good friend (not on this forum - he is not an on-line guy) is riding that one.

woohoo,
great news. I just revived a 72 CB500. I  got it yesterday and the guy said the carbs were syn. not installed and something is wrong with the clutch. I put fresh gas in it ran new fuel line and started right up. I took the cover off thinking it was the ball in the cover. It ussually roll's away and you don't notice it. It was all there, and the 10mm bolt was loose. I noticed the big screw adjustment was 12:00 position so I turned it a 1/4 turn to the right tightned the bolt and now have a clutch.  ;D I have some pics but the usb in my system is messing up. I'll try to get them downloaded on my other computer. The PO put extended forks and a chopper style seat on it. I don't like it. I got a 72 cb500 free a couple years ago and good thing I kept it. Now it is a parts bike, It never had a title.
