dohc engine in a sohc frame?
« on: January 01, 2009, 11:32:57 PM »
what would have to be done to squeeze a dohc into a sohc frame? just found a crack on a downpipe on my frame, and noticed the framed is REALLY rusted on the inside.

i have a good running low mileage 1980 750k.....and i can get a nice sohc 74 for free with a title, i dont want to screw with the sohc motor, as its locked up and missing alot of parts, but the rest of the bike is mostly complete.

what do you think?

Anything is possible with a gas axe and welder but easy ---No
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

Look at the value of the finished product when considering a full custom as you suggest.  Is it worth your time at $5.00 an hour? I doubt it.  It sounds like all you need is a few inexpensive parts (frame, engine) to have TWO bikes  ;D

If you already have the SOHC frame and the DOHC motor, why not just have a play about...remove the DOHC motor and see if it will fit in...you have both items at hand so wont cost you anything, you might be surprised...Im considering same idea as you but with a cb650z frame..
Some people have said I should keep it standard but others said go for it....

But I want to build something that "I" want and not what "others" want...no offence to anyone on here.

Let me know if you go down the route of trying the DOHC engine in SOHC frame..
Cheers

Having what others want is the definition of cool.  No offense intended.  Actually, I suggest he go for whatever he wants to do and learn what it takes to make a swap like that.  Which is more valuable, the painting or the painter?  When he gets done, he can wear the Tshirt that says "Custom Bike Builder" with pride in his knowledge and skills.

True...sometimes you just have to "give it a go" and if it goes tits up, then you gave it a shot...nothing ventured nothing gained as they say

In the past year or so I've seen two sohc frame bikes with dohc  motors on craigslist so I guess it's possible.  ;) I have no idea what mods were involved.

a DOHC cb750 motor is much too tall to fit in the SOHC frame without sectioning the frame to add height. Later DOHC sportbike motors are not as tall.

i have had this same thought putting a dohc in my sohc frame, Acid0atm3al did attempt anything?  I'd be very interested in the outcome.
