Need HELP with primary drive chain, 78 CB550
« on: November 11, 2008, 09:48:52 AM »
:D Hi everyone.  I'm back and asking for help.
I own a 78 CB550.  I know there's something wrong with my transmission and have a pretty good feeling based on what I've seen so far, that one problem is one of the shifting forks.  I have the engine out of the frame, on a table and upside down with the oil pan off attempting to split the case in order to get at the transmission.  My problem is the Main Drive Chain and shaft.  I can't split the case unless I remove the shaft and disconnect the chain.  That make sense?
The manual seems to read that in order get to the transmission one needs to go at it from the top of the engine which seems like WAY more work than necessary.  My buddy, known as prosolar on here, and I figure there has to be a way to get at the transmission from the bottom of the engine where it's located.
Any ideas guys?!

I'm pretty sure you have to split the cases. TT or BryanJ would know for sure.

you can see a lot of the transmission through the oil pan opening, but you'll have to split the cases to so anything. it's not so bad. remove oil pump from the left side, and the clutch cover from the other. i believe you can get the primary shaft out without disassembling the clutch, but it'll probably be easier to do so. with the oil pump removed, you'll be able to see the end of the shaft. tap on the end of it with a drift, and it'll come out the other end. with the pan removed, you'll be able to fish the shaft out while leaving the idler and primary chain gears in place. with the shaft removed, they'll come right out. it won't hurt anything to leave them laying where they are when you split the cases though.

make sure you don't miss any bolts in the cases. in my experience, when you're sitting there scratching your head trying to figure out why it just won't come apart, there was always one bolt forgotten.  ::) use a rubber mallet or deadblow in the solid places and it'll come apart fine. use light amounts of 1104 to reseal it. i probably have whatever trans parts you need, should any be damaged.

Thanks Paul.  I think that shaft drive was my big issue.  Couldn't figure out how to get it out.  I'll refer to this post when I go at it tomorrow night.
Thanks again.

Thats the way to do it, but best to remove clutch as thers are bolt behind that are easier to get at with it off.

check cases carefully to make sure primary chain isnt worn enough to eat into oilway castings

that's what i was thinking of... one of the bearing retainer bolts will be hard to remove without removing the clutch.
