Reliant Drill Press 1/3 hp Benchtop model ~ purchased for $40
« on: November 12, 2008, 07:53:20 PM »
There's a Reliant Drill press for sale locally.  I've contacted the seller who lists the dill press as needing some minor work, inquiring the nature of the problem.  These are pretty simple machines, I imagine it's the pulley, belt, or power cord.

All metal and $50

Any thoughts?

It looks like the Taiwan one that Post Tool had on sale for around $140 back in '86 .......

That one still works ok.... heavy basterd though.

The depth stop is a royal p.i.t.a. if you plan to use a cartridge case trimmer like the Lyman or Forster.

Happy trails.

Here's the owner's reply:

it needs a little sanding and a little oil...the deck and the shaft got wet.  everything works fine.  If you want it, there have been several other people interested, so first come first serve.  Thanks.

If all that is wrong with it is surface rust...
It should be ok.

Now if it got wet 10+ years ago, and has been rusting in the corner... that can be another story.

Some 600 grit and a bit of oil would do good for the cullum rust(finer grit sandpaper would be better in fact)

The table... Take some 160 or 240 and coat it with oil, then sand the surface 'till clean of rust.
Wipe down, re-apply a light coat of clean oil, and you should be good to go.

For 50.00, i'd pick that up personally.(or at least go look at it)

I just picked it up.  It's beefy for a benchtop model.

The rust is just on the surface and due to the unit being stored in a humid basement for a year under a tarp.

It works great and the motor is quiet.

It also came with two vices!

The best part is that he dropped the price to $40.

Can't beat that!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've got to start reading Maine Craigslist again, and renew my Uncle Henry's login........  There are always great deals to be had in Maine.  I really recommend checking it out for anyone within a day's drive.

Hey! Nice Wheels!!!  ;)

Thanks Alan.

You're right, there are great deals to be had here in Maine.  I'm not exactly sure why...

This thing really is great.  5 speeds you set by adjusting the belt on the pulleys at the top.  The lowest speed is 600 rpm.  All metal construction.

It cleaned right up and with a little persuasion I got the deck moving up and down correctly.  The rotating shaft is spotless and up and down movement is smooth.

The 3" and 4 " vices included in the deal will be a big help too.  It is bigger and much heavier that I thought it would be.

Drilled rotors, here I come!

Put a 1/2 inch rope around the pulleys and measure it..
Or Pulley Dia X 3.1416, then divide by 2..write that down and the same calc for other pulley, then add distance between centrelines of pullies... easy huh.. Thats for people who cant measure the rope.
Measure middle pully  (if its a step pully)and try to get dia in the  centre of where the 1/2 inch belt would sit.. see easy.. Dont forget, has to go on/off and adjust...
