Carb Cleaning (What to use)
« on: November 09, 2008, 07:24:16 PM »
I know this topic has already been covered multiple times, but I would like to know a little bit more on the topic.  I recently took off what I thought was a good set of carbs off of my broth-in-laws 750 (we both acquired 750's at the same time both of them having spent many years just out in the weather). But upon removing the float bowl on one of the them I found enough crusted build up to fill almost half the bowl. >:(

Now comes my question (if the answer is already on here then please post the link and scold me if necessary).  What cleaners can I soak them in?  I read in the Clymer manual that regular carb cleaner will eat the plastic piston guide.  What might I use as an alternative? ???  I would like to use something pretty strong just due to the amount of junk in them.  I also due intend to do a full rebuild on each carb as soon as I get them clean.

Any info would really be appreciated! :)

Well, since you had 28 looks and no replies I will give it a shot.  Not knowing what year your 750 is I would not know about the plastic pieces, but yes those carb cleaners love to eat plastic stuff.  I used Gunk carb cleaner that came in a 1 gallon paint can with draining dip basket.  It worked very well for me.  A lot of the guys here swear by Simple Green.  I would suggest removing the plastic, clean and rebuilt them totally.  If they spent a lot of time in the weather like you mentioned, give them the total treatment.  As far as where to find more info, try the FAQ area and do a search on carb cleaning.  I think there may be a ton of stuff there.  Good luck with your project.

+1 on the simple green. clean them good then clean them again, a job that needs to be done thoroughly.

Yup, go the Simple Green route.  I dunno about the Simple Green Max, but I've used the regular stuff undiluted and it cleaned my carbs better than Berryman's.  Plus it's non-toxic, but I wouldn't use it w/o gloves undiluted.

I'm personally not a fan of the simple green for carbs.  It will leave a residue you'll have to scrub off by hand and will discolor the carb bodies and float bowls.  If I did it again, I'd get some chem-dip.

Did you thoroughly rinse them in warm/hot water after using the Simple Green?

Yes.  I put all the parts in large plastic containers (the disposable food storage kind, like glad ware, etc) and soaked them for 8 hours in undiluted simple green.  When I took them out, I rinsed them all in my kitchen with very hot water and the sprayer and a toothbrush to get the hard-to-reach places.

3M makes a very good carb cleaner.  Walmart, NAPA, Pep Boys, brands you might as well be spitting on the varnish and wiping it with water.

Yamaha carb cleaner

...but try and buy it!

I went to my local Yamaha dealer. He said "we don't use that stuff, we use Wurth" !

I use cellulose thinners. Bought it in a gallon can from an autojumble. Probably illegal nowadays and certainly a tight fit in my topbox!

Dusty - you've lost a post?

Bob - is that a rhetorical question? The big black thing on the back of my Triumph is a topbox. It's a box, and it is on top...

I called the local dealer today to ask if they had Yamaha Carb cleaner and he said no, but we have other brands.  I asked him to search by part number to see if he could order it, and sure enough it turns out he had some in stock.

Part number is: ACC-CARBC-LE-NR

Here is the link where I found it which has a nice write up on using it:
