Different frame and engine block numbers

Frame:

CB500-1002395


Engine:

CB500E-1002548



Is this standard? I'm pretty sure this was in a flood in 1975 and I'm just trying to research some of the history.

On Hondas, flood or no flood, engine numbers never match frame numbers. They should each be within certain ranges to confirm you have a K2 engine in a K2 frame for example. Yours are so close I can't imagine a problem.

And even if you had a K3 engine in a K2 frame, or such,  no one counts off for that.  To confirm flood damage, I think you would need to rely on visual inspection of the bike, looking closely for corrosion at wiring plug connections, rust in the headlight bucket (metal?) and the like.

Cool, thanks for the info. I'm mainly going my all the soot that was in the exhaust ports while the mufflers hadn't been taken off and it's been stored inside for the majority of it's non-running life.

Granted those are some nasty pictures. But in the exhaust port I would suspect normal or too rich running. Then sitting for years even inside it will go through condensation cycles that will add lots of water. The rings can be rusted to the cylinders, the exhaust pipes can have rusty holes in them etc. Any area that is mostly sealed up that has air in it can get condensation damage, even when stored inside. Air has water in it, temp change will ring that water out.

Look at the electrical connectors. If they are not stuck together I wouldn't suspect flood damage. Also inside edges of frame tubes, if any are exposed.

If you look on the Vin plate I'll bt is says 4/71
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

Remember "Its always in the last place you look" COURSE IT IS YOU STOP LOOKIN THEN!
