Thought I would post a little update.

Mechanically.

Making some progress, but still not there. I found out on this forum
that the way I had my gas lines running could be causing some
problems. Since the system is gravity feed only, the lines need to have as
little droop as possible. I had mine cut long and hanging WAY below the carbs
because it was easier to get them on and off that way. I corrected that
and it runs better. Still don't have it together enough to get out on main
road to get to speed. I get it to 40 in my subdivision a couple places OK.
It will get to speed, but if I try to make it get there fast, it hesitates very
badly. Like it is gas starved, But if I do a gradual acceleration, it seems to
be able to get to speed. Still need to tweak that. We put a timing light on it
finally and it was a degree maybe two off. Fixed that which also helped a lot.

Bodywork.

Everything except the gas tank is about ready. I am still waiting on
decals from Don so I can put the final clear coats on and get it buffed out. The rest
is buffed out and doesn't look too shabby for a bunch of rookies I don't
think.

We have had a goal to try to have this ready by the Rolling Thunder parade
in DC on May 24th. Not looking too good, but if everything from here on
falls into place easy and I can get it running smoothly enough, it is still
possible. The boys really have their heart set on running this in the
parade, but I won't do it if I don't feel it is safe. Mostly worried about
how it is running. Still not sure I have those carbs adjusted right.

+ 1! Love that gold - great job on the paint especially the sidecar - looking very good. Try the airscrew settings...this can make a huge difference on acceleration to speed. Check the plugs to make sure you are not running lean...

+1 on that. I have the same problem when # 1 fouls and I can tell a huge difference. Good luck. Could I ask for photos of the attachment points on the bike? And a photo of the sidecar frame? I am considering a service car type of sidecar and I need all the info I can get. If not cool.

Got the decal on the gas tank. Unfortunatley rainy and humid so don't want to clear coat now.

Rough fit the sidecar back on frame. Next we start putting in the carpet.

Another question if I may...
Are the four attachments onto the frame bolt on, or do they have tabs welded on the motorcycle frame? Both?

They are all bolt on. The lower mounts are bolt on made by a company called
Dauntless Motors. http://www.dauntlessmotors.com/Mountinghardware/honda_mounts.htm

The lower rear bolts where the centerstand used to go and the front uses the front engine
mount.

The upper mounts were clamps made by a friend of mine, but Duantless Motors also sells those.

The key to a safe and sturdy mount is triangulation. You want a front and rear, upper and
lower mount with as much distance between the upper and lower as possible. A good place to learn
more about this stuff is here http://www.sidecar.com/megabbs/category-view.asp It is not a real
active forum, but tons of information in the archives and many knowledgeable folks there.

The original set-up used frame clamps at all 4 locations. It didn't have very much triangulation plus
the squeeze type clamps were deforming the frame some. It had obviously worked since the mid 70's
but I am much more confident with the current mounts.

Well, we had a first major set back. I had several coats of clear on the gas tank. Monday
I put the decal on the tank. Tuesday, I put several more coats of clear over the decal and on the tank.
We have a lot of rain the past week and I thought the break in rain would be OK, but apparently it
was still too humid. When I started to wet sand the new clear out I noticed countless little pin holes.
They of course filled with all the sanding and buffing stuff so I basically have white pin holes throughout.

I tried to sand through the damaged clear to the good clear knowing it was risky. Well, I ended up blowing
through the bad clear and into the decal f'ing it up.

So, it's back to the sandblaster and start over on the tank. Last night I was mad enough to take a ball
bat to the entire bike but fortunately I didn't. I guess we will get a little more experience at painting..

Well, we are getting close to done. We have it running fairly well. I took it out for 70 miles yesterday and it performed well. Still a little rough at lower RPM's, but I think a carb sync might fix that. At 4K rpm's, it purrs like a kitten.

We have everything finished except carpeting the sidecar and repainting the gas tank I screwed up. For now we are using the old dented tank on it.

The Rolling Thunder demonstration is this Sunday in Washington DC and it looks like we will be able to ride this in that. My sons are excited because for the first time, they both get to go to Rolling Thunder with me.

So, if you plan on being in DC for Rolling Thunder, watch for me. Shouldn't be too hard to miss..

Well, we finally got the tank redone and have it all back together. This project
is almost completely finished except some carpet in the sidecar. I sure am
proud of the work my sons did on this. And what a fun rig to ride.
