I have some more questions for you guys.
« on: November 15, 2008, 12:33:03 PM »
Hey guys, so since I decided that right now I don't have the funding to get the bike running properly (college student). I decided I was going to take the bike down to a roller and motor to clean her up a bit.  While doing this I found a few things that I want to ask you guys about....

1) Before I parked the bike last night I took it for a little ride. i notice that the bars were to the right a little. Is there a way for me to check and see if the frame is bent? Here are some pics of it right now.

Here are some closer shots of the neck area.

Is it possble for just the front end to be screwed up????

Here are some shots trying to capture the front end... When the front wheel is straightened with the frame, the triple trees and the bars are turned to the right slightly. It's hard to capture this but you can kinda see what I'm talking about...

This first shot is of the bars and triple trees straight according to the frame. The wheel turns slightly to the left.

This shot is with the front tire straight according to the frame. the triple trees and bars are turned to the right slightly.

I think the frame is straight... but the front end is screwed up some how. Is what I am describing possible?

2) What is this part???

3) This splice looks to have been done by a PO. This red wire goes from one of the coil wires to two red wires coming from the ignition wiring in the side case. Is there a reason why its there? Im guessing that it has to do with the fact that a 78 k motor was swapped in.

It runs down to these two wires.

This is the wire that it is connected to.

4) What do these wires do? They connect to the clutch lever. The connector is obviously screwed up as it won't ever stay connected.

This is the connector that plugs into the clutch lever that is screwed up.

Your left hand fork leg looks a little bent at the lower fork mount, and the top fork mount looks wider than the lower one, do they measure up the same?
Your mystery part looks like the turn signal buzzer, dont know about the mess of wiring but the wires that go into the clutch lever is the clutch safety switch, stops you starting it in gear, lots of PO`s bypass it

Scotch locks-----I cut em out of anything I find em in.They are by far the biggest cause of wiring problems. That is a turn signal beeper...not the horn buzzer(why would you need a horn buzzer??).

I'd guess yer bars are bent
The triple trees are twisted compared to the front guard, and looking at the front end in pic 2 the top of the wheel looks off centre

Take them off and strip to bare tubes.  Roll them on a known flat surface.  If they flop about, they're bent.  If they roll true, they're straight.

Bent tubes usually make the fork seals leak.  But, they can leak for other reasons, too.

mrbreeze... thats why the harness is out of the bike. there were multiple unplugged connections and multiple amatuer splices. i will be fixing all of these

swoop... its not just the bars its the whole thing the triple trees are turned when the front wheel is straight.

how much am i looking at for a new set of forks? im guessing that the left tube is tweeked back and its causing the tire to turn to the left.

are there any upgrades in forks that i can make. if i have to replace these?

Before you panic, drop the front wheel off and slacken the top and bottom pinch bolts for the forks - make sure everything hasn't  been clamped up out of square.

Easy fix, hold with your knnes & push it straight with the bars..

Then eyeball the fork tubes from the side, if one is bent, easy to see, if both are bent you will have to sight the forks against a handheld straightedge to catch that.

Thats cool that it was clamped crooked.Cheaper than having bent forks or triples. I didn't notice but was it runnin a fender? If the fender is off....there is no fork brace (not that the one on the fender is really worth a sh!t but its better than nothing).

it was running a fender in that picture. but it did nothing to help straighten the forks out. i think i might pick up a billet fork brace.

Terry in Australia was doing some quite awhile back but have'nt heard anything lately. If you run without the fender, you should at least use the fender mount for some resemblance of a brace. If you find a cool brace somewhere...let us know.

Kewl, glad it is fixed.  I was gonna say pull the fender off and look at it again.  It looked tweaked.
