Small motorcycle trailers
« on: November 16, 2008, 07:14:55 AM »
Recently I have made a small motorcycle trailer. Single rail, light, and breaks down easy into the corner of the garage. This is a pic before paint and a couple details.

The axles are removable and the trailer breaks down nicely in the corner of the garage. Now that I'm near completion I kinda wish that I had made the main rail of the trailer break down in two pieces as well so that it would fit into the back of the wife's Subaru wagon ::) I guess my question is: Would this feature be important if you were buying a trailer such as this? Or would it be better to be made out of one solid tube?

Wow, very nice, wish I had one. My wife and I occasionally vacation far enough that riding the bike there is impractical, but wish I had it when we arrived. Nice job.

Thanks Bob, I originaly made it so I could go drag racing next year. There are two tracks local to me, the closest is an hour the other is two. They have "Late Night drags" all summer long that go until midnight. Two hours up/back plus 4~5 hours at the track racing is probably just not safe that late at night.

Sweet trailer bro!  You do have some Mad fabrication skillz!  Instead of folding or bending in the middle, can you just stand it up on end? it looks really strong, but lite weight.

On a side note... what color are you going to powder coat it? Red to match your truck?

Rachet~

*edit- just re-read the "to put in the wife's subaru"... so my standing it upright idea is probably not going to work...

Thanks man! I was thinking more along the lines of cutting it in half and just putting a sleeve inside the main tube and pinning/bolting the two pieces together. I'm in the process of painting now, Stainless Steel Silver. The rail is aluminum and I'm going to take the Mothers and a Flitzit ball to it. Should have some pop. I have had a couple people say they may be interested in one of their own, I may try to Craigslist a couple to help fund some racing leathers.

Ratchet, I have half a project made for your F bike bro... ya have to finish it ;) Heat up that Mig!

I have seen several like that one, there's a "trailer in a bag" out there to. It appears to be made out of 14ga C-channel and 8" wheels. I have thought about my next one being more compact, just not that compact. I used 12" wheels and 2k# axles and bearings. The stub axles are about 1" in diameter and should go a lifetime without replacement with as lightly loaded as they are. I used 2.5" .188 wall square tube for the main tube and 2" .250 wall tube for the axles. If I had not used the aluminum channel and used steel for the bike to set in I could have cut $100 off the material cost, that one piece was $196! But the aluminum will really look great when it's polished out. I think I could sell mine for $850 and make a couple hundy for me ;D I think $1000+ (by the time it's ready) for a trailer made of such light materials is on the steep side.
