550K runs better but still not right
« on: November 15, 2008, 12:54:42 PM »
OK I set points, set timing and adjusted valves. They really needed it. But my 74 550K runs better but still not right. It will get up to 4500 alright but after that it labors to get any more RPMs. It has new filter with stock air box and aftermarket 2 into 2 exhaust. Carbs have been built and synchronised. When you let off the gas it pops through the exhaust. I didn't pull and clean the emulsion tubes when I built the carbs could it be that or any other suggestions?? Tattoo

It's s lot easier if you use the same thread after you make a change we suggest, instead of making a new one, because we have to go find the old thread and see what we've already suggested to you....

So, probably asking you again, have you checked for air leaks on the intake?
And the carbs need to be absolutely clean.

Do this:

Take it up to the 4500 rpm where it starts crapping out, and engage the choke a little.
See if you get more power.
No.

Hi Sorry for starting a new thread I didn't know. No air leaks I checked with carb cleaner. If you give it choke it just bogs worse. I thought of that. The carbs jets were clean through. No sedaments in the carbs but Like I said I didn't remove the slides or the tubes. Thanks, Tattoo

You know that's what I was think about. It seems to be runnng a little fat, rich to me. I wish I had looked to see what size jets it had in it now. I guess to much gas is as bad as not enough?? I'll let you know tomorrow on this thread, Tattoo

Ok, I've road it several times and found out it doesn't like the air filter. I ran all the pilot screws all the way in and it still ran and it ran much better but not great. It will get up to 6500 RPMs now. #3 plug is flowing from time to time also. I pulled of a bowl and it has a #105 main jet. A #59 drill index fits in it is that the right size for a #105 jet. Any suggestions? Tattoo

Why do you have #105 mains?

Stock is #100.  Could explain why it doesn't like the air filter and is fowling plugs.

What position are the needle clips in?

Did the bike have pods before?

#100 = 1 mm = .0395 inch =  about a #61 bit shank
#105 = 1.05mm = .041 inch = about a #59 bit shank

LOL I really don't know why it has 105s in it. I just bought the bike so I don't know much about it except what I have done to it. It looks to me the previous owner was a tinker. The points were way off, carbs were way out of sync, etc. The only thing not stock is aftermarket 2 into 2 exhaust. I don't know what the clips are set on but I bet I will get to find out? Where is the best place to get 100 jets? Thanks for your help. Tattoo

Best jet source for me is a spare carb set. ;D

I had 4 into 2 exhaust on my 74 Cb550 for years with stock jetting.

If I recall, Sirius had them for sale.  You could also call the guys at motorcyclecarbs.com to see if they still have them.

Where is the best place to get 100 jets?

Just got both slow and main jets, as well as gasket set for my 74 550.

So, the strategy is to lie to people you are asking for help?

I think I'll be busy going for a ride.

Good luck!
