If it's a custom (vs. restoration), that's the whole idea.  Go for what you like.  My tank decal reads Honda in gold Norton lettering.

i'm gonna do some one off side badges on my cb650c (from a local vinal decal maker(like those cheesy graphics as seen in the fast and furious movies)) just a simple design with model info all in either brushed aluminum or chrome finish

Paint it the color you want. I have done some in correct colors but is more fun to try new colors.

My 78 CB550 is getting Candy Ruby Red like my 71 SL175. Not correct for the 78 but I like the color.

the graphics won't ever fade, but they are a "sticker". i'm gonna apply them after paint, but befor i'm finished doing clear coat. so they'll last pretty much forever that way. the place i get mine can do most anything you can come up with in any colors your computer can come up with.    also i've had a chrome colored vinal on the back window of my blazer for 6 years now and it still looks like new(except where i nicked it with the window scraper)

Vinyl decals will fade and age with time if it is cheap vinyl. You can buy it in different grades and from different manufactuers (avery,oracal,3m,lg, and more). You can get most of them in a 4 year, 6year, 9year outdoor vinyl. If you use something good like a 9 year vinyl it should last on you tank for a long time since it will not be abused by the weather as an outdoor sign would. Also some vinyls are made for surfaces with curves and some are made for flat surfaces.
