Finch boxes and other "newbie" questions.
« on: November 18, 2008, 08:10:02 AM »
Howdy,

Please forgive my ineptitude.  I am new to this forum, but not motorcycles. I just bought a '75 CB 750 to ride, and was given three more "bikes in a box" from a friend.  The piles-o-parts are part of a project my brother-in-law (Trav-i on this forum) and I are undertaking.  I run a fabrication and machine shop in N. Ga.  As I paruse this great forum for information and tips I have found lots of great information and support.  While looking for answers, I make the "search" feature my first stop. This has usually been all I need, until now...  Question 1)  What is a finch box, and where did the name come from?  By all rights it appears to be nothing more than a box for the wiring, and a nifty way of "cleaning up" the oem wiring bird's nest.  2) Is there an interchange manual available, or a way of knowing what parts are compatable from later model bikes on our 70's machines?  For example: Can 80-82 CB900 coils be used on a 76 CB 750?  These 80-82 coils are plentiful, and cheap.  Other than the physical locations of mounts (irrellevant on a custom build), what would the difference be?  This may be a loaded question, or one requiring a three page response.  If so, don't worry about it.  The point of the question is really whether or not there is an archive or other recource of known parts exchanges that have been sucessfully used.  Thanks in advance, and keep up the great work!

Chris

go to hondachoppers.com for more info on the finch box.  the coils should be all right, the newer ones having the advantage of having replaceable wires.

Thanks.

I looked up the Finch Box on "GOTF", but their link was temporarily out of order.  I suspect it was named after its inventor, but I am guilty of being the curious type.  Thanks for the response about the coils.

Ron Finch was a very active builder in the 70,s, still going today.

I think a few others made them boxes, but he may have made the first ones..

2)  http://www.cmsnl.com/ has parts diagrams and lists for these bikes. When you open the window for the individual part there is a "used in, a list of models for which this product was made" box which itemizes other bikes the part also fits.

Careful with those DOHC 750/900/1100 coils.

they are 2.5 ohm, and stock cb750 coils are 5.0 ohm(i believe).

Using those DOHC honda coils will increase the load on your already barely capable electrical system.

Another route is getting a (??) resistor(capicitor?) pack from hondaman to be able to run these coils without any problems.
