500 to 550 transplant
« on: November 16, 2008, 08:53:55 PM »
I didn't find much searching for this, but would anyone see any immediate hang ups or problems with just
switching the 500 block to a 550. Such as carb settings, mounting etc. I am considering one of these two blocks off ebay

I've heard it can work....

I would prefer the '78 (your first link) over the '75 for the top-end improvements.

You may need to use some other 550 bits... rear sprocket(different primary gearing), clutch cable bracket(maybe cable too) come to mind.

The 500 carbs and intakes should fit but might need jet changes.

Good luck.

the 550 engine will drop right into a 500 frame if that's what you mean.

Z1enterprises.com
servicehonda.com

search the FAQ's for a thread about where to find parts. there's a good list.

complete engines swap easy as long as you use the r/h rear mounting plate from the 550.
Cylinders only sometimes do and sometimes dont fit depending on how big Honda bored the holes in the crankcase
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

I'm working on something similar, but I'm stuffing a 79 CB650 engine in my 71 CB500 frame. Its gonna be a beast!
