balance tubes on header

just wondering if anyone has experimented with balance tubes on their headers or perhaps shorter headpipes....just seems like a long tube header is such a waste on a street bike and some improvements could be made...any thoughts?

Someone posted a lengthy discourse on the subject of length, diameter and backpressure a while back....search function should turn it up.....
