1982 yamaha xv920j virago(dads old bike)
« on: November 06, 2008, 01:34:58 PM »
i've been given an oppertuity to buy my dads old bike, as the title says it's a 82 xv920j virago, dad took very good case of it. he bought it new, and rode it every season till about 93(?) when he bought his harley. it's been parked in the shed ever since. everything worked when it was parked, however it was parked with fuel in the carbs so they need seriously cleaned. and the mounts for the old windjammer faring have broke since it was parked, i'm not gonna put the fairing back on just a head light and signals. sorry for the long post, but it leads to my question. what would be a fair price for this bike?

My brother used to have one of those. Really nice bikes. Lousy starter, but nice bikes.

Kelly Blue book lists value at $1290 for my area. If it's seriously been sitting in a shed for the last 15 years, I'd say offer him $600 for it and see what he says.

15 years parked? dont matter what maintainence went before its gonna cost a #$%*load to put back on the road:-

Tyres
Chain ( or was that the shaft drive)
Battery
full set of lubes and filters
LOTS of carb work
Etc
Etc
Etc
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

In that case BE VERY CAREFUL with the oil filter as it can be fitted backwards which starves the cams of oil and costs a kin fortune

Just put one of these back on the road last month....

If at all possible... Check the bolts on the starter casing. Not the mount bolts but the CASING looooong bolts. Try to tighten them. After sitting for so many years they might loosen.

Went to start mine and the whole f'in starter twisted in the casing. Who's bright idea was it to only put 2 bolts in the casing??

After tires, carb work, tank cleaning/sealing, lube change, fork seals, and brakes..... Had about $600 into it in parts and fluids.

Then the customer got my labor bill..... ;D

Did I spell "casing" right??  Case.....Ing.... hmmm

i had forgotten about this thread. here's an update. heter talking to dad about it he says he don't wanna sell it, but if i put the money and labor into it i can use it. so i've replaced all the seals on the forks, and all the seals in the rear shock along with the air lines. i pulled the carbs and the tank and thorouely cleaned them, i also changed the oil and filters and then did a compression test(was good and equal). that's where i am on this bike right now. next i'm going to rebuild the brakes, replace the fuel lines all the cables. after that i'm gonna replace both tires and a new battery, not to forget plugs and wires then tuning and then i should have dads old bike somewhere close to roadworthy, safe and reliable. if all goes well this will be my commuter bike and my poor cb650c will be rebuilt into a one off custom cruiser-bar hopper

update. finished the old girl off today, dropped in my battery poured in some fuel crossed my fingers and pressed the button. amazingly she sputtered to life on the first try. after playin with the carbs for about half an hour she was idleing steady @ 1200and would readily rev, so i decided to take her for a short spin around the block just to be sure. she ran flawlessly, shifted smoothly with plenty of power to spare. i wish i could have taken her for a more extensive test ride, but i've yet to get front signals, headlight and the tires are probably 20 years old (not to mention the tags expired back in 92) so it was a very short ride. no sign of leaks, she's charging like she should, and she wants to go. all that's left will be taken care of by next spring. guess that makes 2 classics i've brought back from the dead now, guess it's time to put some wrench time in on the old 650 and fix all those leaks and make her into something to be proud of again.
