Anyone out there who knows lots about electric motors?
« on: November 19, 2008, 08:51:17 PM »
G'Day Guys, I've "inherited" a beautiful "Brobo" metal cut off saw with coolant pump etc, I've wanted one of these things for a long time, and this one is my favorite price, free!

Trouble is, it's 3 phase (415 volt) and at home I've only got single phase (240V) electricity supply. Now years ago I had a similar problem with a lathe I was thinking of buying, and a friend (now deceased, sadly) drew a wiring diagram of how I could rewire the 3 phase motor to work on single phase?

Now I don't want you all thinking I'm just sucking up, but some of the smartest blokes I know are on this site, so any advice would be appreciated, this saw will be a hell of an improvement over my 50 year old power hack saw, it's like me, old and buggered! ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

"Crazy is a very misunderstood term, it's a fine line that some of us can lean over and still keep our balance" (thanks RB550Four)

seeing as you scored the machine for free, i'd be sorely tempted to bypass all the possible transformers and phase converters and just buy a new motor.  if the wires for 220 are already in the motor you're lookin' good but still need the phase converter.   it's a time, materials and performance thing.   ya, it can be rewired...and you can buy a phase converter.....but it depends on the original wiring of the motor.  there are several different kinds and depending on the use/load the base wiring profile would vary.  sooooo...short answer to your query is:  you can rewind it but you really ought to know what the original windings are before you start.   there's a bunch o' wires in there...one wrong hook up and zzzzzttttt.....  waste of time.
i'd just get a new single phase motor rated for 220v and let it go at that.  if you really are dead set on finding a way to rewire this one, i've got my electrical machinery handbooks on the shelf above my head.  give me more information and we might be able to dope something out.  but there's better heads than mine out here for this stuff.
