mountain bike update
« on: November 18, 2008, 11:25:44 AM »
Ok, so I bid on a bunch but finally just went for a good deal on a Trek 4500.
If I get hooked I might check out something later but first to get the leg in
shape.

So, indoor trainers?

I use to use rollers but now, what with trying to get the busted leg back
in shape, I don't think I want to chance a fall on a stone floor coming off the rollers ;)

what are some good trainer options? what yall using?

I 'm sure running in the shallow end of a pool would be helpful.
Indoors and 80 degrees of course !

dude...

I wish I knew you were in the market for a bike, I manage a bike shop in Falls Church and I could have hooked you up.

Trainers and MTB's are a weird mix, go get the thinnest and smoothest tire you can find or you will be hating life.

If you want an indoor trainer, check the ones on my shops website www.tribonzai.com if you are willing to make the trek out here I will give you anything for cost, if you need or want it shipped I will hook you up with a code for 10% off retail and we do free shipping.

The CycleOps Fluid2 is the hot ticket these days... it lists $329, we do $249 shipped then minus the 10% you are looking at $225 to your door, probably around $200 (whatever our cost is) if you want to head inside the beltway

Drew, as usual I'm a day late and a dollar short, but I got the trek pretty cheap.
I'll check out your trainers. I'm not looking for anything really fancy just something to spin on.
thanks for the info on the tires.

+1 and +1

Knobbys on a trainer are lame. Get a cheap slick for the back.
The CycleOps are the most "real" feeling type of trainer.
The mag type feel like you're riding in wet sand - but they are good for training at specific wattages.  used to use them to train for persuit - even in summer. You can do some wicked power intervals on them but I don't think that's what you're after.
The fans are too damn loud.

MAKE SURE you cover your bike while you're on the trainer or the salt in your sweat will dissolve your bike before spring.

being a bike mechanic I see more $$ damage each spring from sweat then I do yearly from crashes, plus the repairs are a pain in the @$$

I agree, I use to train some with rollers cause at least i felt like i was riding.
No where near an indoor track in this part of the world. I'm just looking to get full
motion in the knee back first then mountain climbing with a chainsaw will do the rest of the therapy.  ;D

I had my last knee surgery in April and I rode my bike as rehab.  It really helped a ton.  My doctor told me to expect 6 to 8 months before the knee felt close to normal.  It is now Nov. and I am happy to say that it is about 90%.  Biking did it wonders, although at first it hurt like hell.  I use clipless pedals and they have good adjustably for a "floating" range of motion, but my knee was so buggered that it took time for it to feel stable when i got out of the saddle on hill climbs.  I also had to overcome patellar tendonitis, which took longer to go away than I expected.  About five weeks ago I began doing leg presses and squats at the gym.  I stayed away from the heavy weights until I knew the knee could take it.  I started light with high reps and now I can leg press 540lbs. and squat 305lbs again.  Leg extensions also help.  Now that I am lifting again, the knee has made huge progress in terms of strength (all of the muscles that support the joint really help the knee to feel more stable) and flexibility without pain.  I have full ROM that I didn't expect ever to have again.

Give it time........... and it will come back.  I am an impatient person, so it was a tough pill for me to swallow, but it came back.  I am still not running, probably never will again because I have little to no meniscus left, but the bike is my saving grace.

good luck with the rehab,
