I am installing  new bearings in my CB750 rods.
Does it matter if the numbers or letters, on the big end of the rods, face the front of the engine when I place the rods back on the crankshaft?
The rods had been removed from the engine when I got it.
Thanks

On my '69 motor the matching letters/numbers on the caps and rods face the front of the motor according to my notes when I took it apart. I don't know if it matters or not though. Hopefully someone will be able to confirm it for both of us.

Forget the numbers and letters, install the rods so the bearing tangs face the exhaust.

From the Honda Shop Manual    "make sure that the bearing pawls point towards the front of the engine"     these are the notches in the big end of the rod. Use these to orient the rods rather than letters/numbers (though they will all end up with letters or numbers on same side).

   EDIT:Yeah, what Kevin said ;) :) :)

I just checked, I had all the tangs facing rearwards.
I took the rods off and reinstalled them with the bearing shell tangs facing to the exhaust side.
This left the letters on the big ends facing to the front.
I read my Honda Shop Manual and cannot find any where that states this  proceedure.
I also looked in Haynes and Clymer.
My Shop Manual is for the CB750 K0 with the K1 supplement..
Can any one give me a page number?
I like to see things that I may have missed.
I have most manuals.
Forgive me, I just have to see it in writing.
best regards

I have never seen this in print in Haynes, Clymer, or even the 69-78 Honda Shop Manual(general). If you HAVE to see it in print then download the CB750 K8 F3 Shop Manual from this page

http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=17788.0

   And look in section 10 :) :)

I have found it in print.
It is on page 10-7 of my copy of the 78 F3 K8 CB750 manual.

"Caution
Be sure the bearing caps are installed in their correct location and the bearing pawls point to the front of the engine. Torque the cap bolts"

Thanks for everyones help.

just because I have too much time on my hands today I checked 3 motors I have here and the letters/numbers on the side of the rods all face towards the rotor end of the crank. On my sandcast it's the opposite way. Very strange.  ???
Back to you regular progamming.
Cheers,
Cliff.
