Topic: Seat swap questions

Anyone ever swap a K6 seat on a K8? I picked up a perfect K6 seat and tank from my neighbor and plan to put them on my K8. Looking at both seats the hinges and latch are on opposite sides. The k8 is wider and longer hinges are spaced further apart. Now I could chop the mounts off the frame and weld them on the other side. Or maybe swap the hinges and latch post on the seat pan. But I'm worried on how I would attach them other than a pop rivet with out removing the seat cover and foam.

Any ideas?

I would get on Ebay and find a 77-78 seat. Then I would sell the 76' seat. I have never sold anything on Ebay but I have bought plenty. Also...buy & sell on Craigslist....its free.

I got the seat off of my bike... while its comfy it looks like a$$ IMO... I was thinking about maybe buying a replacement cover and carving down my seat foam, but not sure what the cover would look like being they only list one at Dennis Kirk for a 77 and 78....

I have both seats on my 1975. The PO welded brackets to fit a 1978 seat on it and I cleaned them up. No latch for the 78 seat but usually I only use that seat when touring so it has two up and a set of bags holding it down.

honestly though it is easier to have your 78 seat reskinned  with thinner foam than it will be to weld the brackets for it.

i did swap an earlier seat on my k8 ,grinded off the hinge tabs as they will hit the earlier skinnier seats frame,attached a bracket under the seat .rigged it up so that now a bolt through the what once was the helmet lock frame ,don't remember if i drilled a new hole into that helmet lock attachment thats welded into the frame,,anyways it worked out there's other ways to adapting an earlier seat maybe a hinge ,i installed a battery cutoff switch under the oil tank so i really don't need to be messing with anything under the seat,,you can do your mod just takes patience,,the earlier seat looks a little bit more vintage thats why i did the swap,,,love my k8 it won two show trophies this short summer ,dam i wish it was summer again have to move out of here, there is a toyfortots motorcycle parade coming up Dec7 will be my first,im sure i'll freeze my ass off but it'll be fun

I have a K8 and I have spent the most on seats out of anything on my bike...If you do find an original K8 seat (from my experience) the foam will be all mashed out and the vinyl will rip even if it look brand new...its really 30 years old and dry as a bone. I did have some luck re-skinning an original K8 seat with a new re-issue skin. It looks pretty nice...but if you want an awesome seat...go with the Guliari seat from Classic City Cycle (pictured below)

I hear you. Just didn't want to spend that much on a seat so early on in my project + I have to take a bag with me to work and back packs and fat guys don't get along  My K8 seat is in pretty good shape and feels darn nice on the rear actually, just hate the looks... Maybe I will go with a seat like yours and then keep mine for a backup... Whats the best way to get in touch with Classic City Cycle?

  if you search a post of mine under "my first bike show"there is a pic of my k8 the seat is from an early cb750, the skin i sew it up myself,,,,crappy pic i know had a guy at an internet cafe insert the pic,had a hard time doing it myself,well anyways basically after you mount a bracket under the seatframe with a bolt fastened to it, threads facing down,,,that bolt will slide through that helmetlock  original seat latch frame and fastened with a lock nut, in my pic you can barely see the chrome lock nut (top right of the shock),you can also see my battery cutoff switch(with red key inserted) under the oil tank,,,again your mod would be better off with a hinge for better battery access,maybe stick with the original k8 all the butchering i did is not a good thing,,good luck
