Oil filter technical question
« on: November 24, 2008, 06:36:19 PM »
It was my first oil change on my bike!

On Part List, page 15, there is item 10 named Seat, oil filter spring:  is that part the kind of big rubber grommet that is present on both sides of the oil filter element???

I ran my first season with a magnetic oil drain plug, there was some black stuff on it, I supposed it did its job to collect metal crap in my engine.

Is there some maintenance to do with the check valve enclosed into oil filter center bolt?

It's a metal washer that slips over the oil filter bolt after the spring is installed and keeps the spring from digging in to the rubber grommet of the filter. A lot of times it gets lost during a filter change because it tends to stick to the old filter element and goes un noticed when the filter is thrown away. Honda still sells them.
I ran without one for a long time, and discovered it was missing by accident.

My washer was missing when I got my 550.  I got one from my local Honda dealer for a buck or two.  You could use any washer as long as it is a little larger than the OD of the spring and fits over the filter bolt.  It's job is to keep the spring from chewing into the rubber grommet on the filter.

Thank you so much for the info!

I screened the oil after and didn't find it, I just found my oil pan plug washer at the bottom of the recovery pan...
