Opinions wanted, should I pick this up for $20?

This seems like an awesome way to pick up a 750 on the cheap. I realize it will need a total rebuild and that is fine. I suppose worst case scenario, I could part it out and make a bit of money, but I'd rather resurrect teh old girl  ;D  What are some of the pitfalls I am looking at, especially title wise, I realize all states are different, but since it is Sunday the DMV isn't open so I can't call and bug them.

Thanks,

Brandon
Sure it's for sale! How much you ask?? Well, how much are you willing to pay??? Now triple it, that's the price!

Definately will check into that. Do you think a bill of sale on a UT DMV form would be pretty good for that?

Thanks,

Brandon

buy it now, check the numbers later.
If its stolen give them the sellers details and your out $20
If its not your up a 750 for almost nothing

Looks pretty rough...I know it's $20 but how much are you going to put into it? $1500-2000 at least. Or you could just part it (if there are decent parts there) and make a couple bucks. I want the front caliper if it has one...

My thoughts exactly.

Yeah, I know it is gonna take some cash and time to get her on the road again. I am not deluding myself about how much it could cost, but since my other bike runs I'm not in any hurry :D  If for some reason I decide to part her out, I'll give all the awesome members here first crack at parts. But I don't think I will.

$20?  are you serious?  The only questions are: can you haul it home? do you have a spot for it?  Don't count on a title, but laws change.  If one DMV person tells you no, ask someone else at another location, then another.  Don't toss anything out, someone somewhere will need every part that's useable, or keep them for your other projects.  Also a good frame is a good frame, numbers are just numbers and different ones have been known to appear on some frames here and there from time to time......

Why not count on a title? Is it possible to register and insure an untitled bike? Or do I just find a frame w/a title?

;D Called him and will be picking this one and one other a cx500 parts bike up tonight. I'll part out what's left of the CX500 to pay for both.

Thanks,

Brandon

I live in Massachusetts a title state, just north is New Hampshire a non title state for bikes 15 years old (I think) So if I pick up a bike without a title, I can check the Vin# with the DMV or state police to see if it's stolen... which may make it a bad purchase...  but to get a title I could use a title service, or I have a buddy in NH who I can sell it to, he can register it then sell it back to me.  With this history of recent registration, I'll be able to title and register it in my name, in my state.  I haven't done this yet, but it's on my list if the right bike pops up.  I know you're miles from the state border, but maybe you know someone who'll be able to do something like this.  Or use a title service for what? $100?  and however much time they take.

A friend gave me a k8 about 1 1/2 months ago.  It didn't have a title and it didn't run ( only needed ignition).  I went to the DMV here in Tennessee and got about 5 papers. One was a bill of sale ( had to be notarized), another was an appraisal by a dealer ( the local Yamaha dealer appraised it for $50!),  another had to be filled out by a law enforcement officer ( he called in the vin # to see if it was hot)  Another was a paper to verify that it was a gift (no sales tax).  When I got all the papers filled out,  I took my $28 to the DMV and they gave me a tag that day.  The title came in the mail about 4 weeks later.  BTW, the red bike to the left is it.  The new ignition and front brake pads was $140.  I have since put about 400+ miles on it.

You don't pick it up, then i'm gonna.
SLC ain't that far, and 20.00?

As long as I get a bill o sale, i'm in the clear.
Lack of info title costs like 15.00 or so.

I'm off!

I'm an hour away, and he said it's already spoken for(i'm assuming you)
I'm not about to drive for an hour and piss you off.

He has a 550 there for $100 everything minus tank and title.
As well as a (???)'85 nighthawk frame(shaftie) for $5.00(no title, see a pattern here?)
Too bad it's a shaft drive, or i'd grab it... If it had the motor i'd grab it too...but no motor.
And I am not interested in converting to shaft without the bits to do it.

Do yourself a favor and get a bill of sale, and CONFIRM with his ID that what he signs is his real name...
Just to cover your rear.

I have gotten a lack of info title and it cost like 15.00. WELL worth it, but with no bill of sale if it's stolen, you are the one in the hot seat.

Good luck!
Thats one smokin' deal!

I appreciate the consideration :)

One of the frames I am picking up has a title. When I spoke with him I verified he would be ok with signing a bill of sale, like you said, gotta cover my bum. I'll just ask to see his drivers license, if he is legit, he shouldn't have any problems showing it. If not, I walk away. I don't need legal problems, no matter how good a deal it is.

:'( Well, it was not meant to be. I called him back to let him know I was on my way,  and apparently someone else had called and offered him $75 for just the engine. He was nice enough to tell that person that the bike was already spoken for and offer me the whole thing for $75, and if I had the money I still would have grabbed it. Unfortunatley that is more than I have at the moment. Soos, was that you that offered him the $75? I hope so, I don't mind being outbid so to speak, especially not by a fellow SOHC member  ;D It just would have bugged me to lose it for the same $20. Anyhow, there will be more awesome deals, just gotta pinch my pennies till I find them. Thanks everyone for the information!

no, I called and talked to him, but heard someone was on the way in the afternoon, so I figured it was you.

I didn't offer him anything.
Chatted a bit about the other bikes he has though.

Figures....
I should have gone and gotten it I could have been there in 30 minuites (if i didn't get pulled over  ;D ;D)
Then at least you would have ended up with it for the $20 he quoted.

Thats something I HATE.
If you say you are going to do something DO IT.
Don't say one thing and do another.

I better shut up before I go on a rant here.....

WOW,  you would have done that for me?!?! SOOS, you are awesome!! If I can ever do a favor for you just let me know!

My boss was gonna let me take and extended lunch to go get it, but one of my coworkers was a no show, so I needed to stay at work (gotta keep the bacon coming in  ;D )

Anyway, I'll get over it, and I am sure other good deals will come my way.
