What is the worst place to....
« on: November 24, 2008, 08:10:48 PM »
try and kick over your bike not realizing it is in gear, tossing you and dumping your bike?

11am this morning I did it in front of my local Honda shop after picking up some special order bits in front of a half dozen people. If you can think of a worse place or time to do such a thing, LMK and maybe I will feel better.

at least now I know how one of the PO's dented the stator cover like that...

I hit the starter button on my 85 Kawi 750 turbo in front of a bunch of boozed up harley riders...

I was facing the curb so it didn't go rocketing out from underneath me, but scared me crapless and made them all laugh at me.

Felt like a total noob after riding most of my life.

I feel for you man. Happens to the best of us.

Then you must me more of a newb than we though Breeze, lolol.

I did it once, and only once, right in front of my friends at the CHP office. I was showing Rita off to a couple friends who are cycle cops with CHP and when I went to start her up to show off how she sounded I found she was still in gear. Thank god she has that long heavy springer front end on her, kept her from flipping over. I was able to keep her from falling but all the CHP out there were laughing so hard. It happens.

I know Jeff!!!!.....I KNOW!!! (I was jus kiddin'!!!)
I went on a putt one day back in Wyoming.I was with about 6 other bikes. We stopped to have lunch at this place in Thermopolis,Wy. I was one of the last to pull up and everyone got the curb in front.I parked behind them on the sidewalk. After we ate...everyone wanted to go a couple a blocks up the road to a pub and play pool.My lady was lolligaggin' and they were taking off.She got on back and I pulled off of the sidewalk over the curb except I was going real slow. The front wheel went onto the road and the rear was still on the sidewalk.I went to put my foot down and there was no ground!!!! Over we went and other than a broken clutch lever...all was OK.
So.....a few people saw that show and got a snicker.I had to speed shift for 60 miles to get home!!!!!!.....Like you sald.....it happens!!!!! ;D

I guess I've been lucky.  It has never happened to me in front of anyone.  The closest I've come to it was one winter I pulled up at work, stopping parallel to the garage door.  I put the side stand down a little too hard, and it bounced right back up.  When I thought I was easing it down on the stand, it kept on going over and threw me into the very loud garage door.  No one saw it happen, but people came a runnin'.

Stopping, after a ride on my Indian with my wife, the bike went over on it's side. briefly pinning HER leg.
I immediately went around to the front of the bike to see if the handlebars were bent.
That was the last time she rode with me--1971 !

Same with my CBR

Although, about 3 days after I got it I managed to dump it in my driveway man-handling it around. I had a car port and as such it made turning around about a 12 point turn! Well the back of the driveway is about a 10 inch drop and did what Breeze did...went to put my foot down and there was no ground! Nobody saw it except the wife   :-[ ofcourse she was already against me having a street bike and then was convinced that I really would kill my self if I couldn't even managed to push it around...

Havent made this mistake.....yet!
But, once parked on hot pavement and walked up to a motel to get a room.
I heard the crash and walked back, broken clutch lever so off to the
house 60 miles with the speed shift,

and on the Duck, I drove off into a field on a side hill got off and cut timber.
Then when time to leave got on and was easing it around and put my foot down
in a hole  and toppled. It aint fun.

Mr. Breeze we need to start the 60 mile club.

I think this one will make you feel better man....

In the summer in Minneapolis every Thursday every kind of motorcycle imaginable meets up near the Leaning Tower of Pizza off Lake Street and takes over the road. Afterward I was with a bunch of people we stopped to get something to eat. I forgot I had the thing in first.... it rode into the street and tossed me into a handicap parking sign. There was probably well over 150 motorcyclists watching me. Good thing I had my full face on or they'd have seen a new shade of red... man I felt like a dumb a$s.

A few years ago,my oldest son trailered his bike up to the bay area from Las Vegas. I didn't see him do this but he told me about it .He had a Shadow 1100 and had it on the trailer on the side stand. He was going to unload it and undid the tie-down on the left first.I guess the right one had lot of tension on it and it pulled the bike over on it's side.He had a scraped side cover and a dent on the rear shock. I felt like laughing but he was so pissed off I thought I had better control it. I took his shock off and turned it around so the dent was on the inside where it couldn't be seen.

Took the centerstand off my cb450.  When using the kickstart, the sidestand went through a fresh patch of asphalt.  Shifter went through the stator cover.  Rode home with oil leaking out.   >:(
Other incident happened to a good friend.  He rode with a outlaw club with a 69 BSA.  He had it parked out front of the clubhouse  on the sidestand when the weld on the sidestand mount broke and took a row of bikes with it.   :-[
