Frame color other than STOCK BLACK?
« on: September 25, 2005, 08:23:20 AM »
I've got the urge to do a winter teardown and do all of the things I overlooked in the prior project stages..... has anyone painted or powdercoated their frame some other color than black?  pictures?

I haven't done it, and I don't think I have any pictures, but I think it looks pretty sweet if done right and doesn't clash with the other colors of the bike.  If you're going to go through the trouble anyway, definitely get it powdercoated.

Powdercoating is DEF. the way to go.

If I were you , I would sit down and think about a color scheme that you want to go with , like black & red , or silver and black , or ????
It always looks nice when the frame and the bodywork matches....

Many years ago i "chopped" an Enfield 250 and i walked into the local bike emporium and bought four rattle cans (large ) of the colour they hadnt sold any of which turned out to be Metallic green. Looked OK with a polished engine and black tank, unfortunately this was in the early 70's when digital ment using your finger and colour photos were expensive so i havent got a photo except in black and white with a different tank.

Here is a tip I wish someone had given me before I had mine done last winter.
Good chance the people who powdercoat your bike, will not have done alot of them in the past.

Make sure to personaly go over the frame and stuff somthing into all the holes with threads on them.
It is a real PAIN to get the hardened powder coat OUT once it gets onto the threads

Most shops that Powdercoat , that know what they are doing , will plug all holes before the item gets sprayed...

OK, completely ignore my earlier post. Apparently I am a complete idiot and have no idea what I'm talking about. Sorry I offered my thoughts. It seems I was off base. I guess I don't know what I was thinking. I'm sure you have had many bikes powder coated so you probably didn't need my input.
I have been corrected and put in my place.

All powder coaters know what they are doing so give er with no thoughts to the outcome and pay no attention to detail. :P

Jesus, give me the strength to..........

Granted, there are those that know what there doing but for personal sound mind I'd make it a point to go over all the spots you don't want coated.

Rob Lloyd, the name rings a bell. I think he is the one I picked up a spare 750 K0 engine from (er, most of one) for free last summer. He helped hoist into the back of my CRV, but unfortunately, was not around at the other end to help get it out, ugh!

Well Dan, it's one of carpy's bikes, they're all really nice.....
I wonder Bob, just how many CR-V's have hauled sohc 750 motors, I got my spare to the new (old) house that way, of course nobody was around to help me load it up, so I had to lighten it a little.....cam, valvetrain, head and jugs...(should be an exercise in patience if I ever build it back up).....lightened it enough for me to lift alone. It makes me want to laugh at those biker build-off builders who have to get their largest friend to muscle in the engine.....

But so far I want to keep with my graphite gray metallic bodywork, polish up my pitted chrome, polish up everything aluminium, stainless bolt kit, Gray or silver metallic frame, and my black Kerker with the chrome meg, and a second attempt at a custom solo seat on the stock pan (first one was a nice try, but no.)

Frames, swingarms, etc often have weld splatter on them.  If you are going the sandblast/powdercoat route spend half an hour with a cold chisel or chipping hammer and knock the BBs off.
