Let's talk bearings
« on: November 24, 2008, 03:46:53 PM »
I am replacing my wheel bearings and have found a few different kits. So let's get to talking about them.

First what brand did YOU buy and what experiences have you had?

I have heard that the double sealed are the way to go but most places I have found do not specify if they are double sealed and only show a picture of one side.

SOOOOOO where did you get your wheel bearings? How much were they?

Are the Timken's (sp) really far superior?

I am willing to pay the extra money for a quality bearing kit (dust shields included) opposed to the $8 (bearing only) ebay "kits". I am the "Do it right or don't do it at all" kind of guy. Especially when it comes to stuff like bearings or time consuming parts.

I found a kit on Z1 but do not know the quality.

Thanks, Bouncer

I've had good experiences with both Timken and NTN bearings. Every wheel bearing or roller bearing I've got have had seals on both sides, so I'm not even sure they sell them anymore with one seal out.

I would try to get the bearings from Honda, which are probably built by Timken anyway.

I will say, I have seen some rather poor bearings.......such as RBI Bearings. Could have just been a bad batch though  ::)

Thanks matt,
Do you have any idea on where I could pick up a set of Timkens or NTN's? I hate ebay so anywhere but there, ha.

Anyone else have input/suggestions?

Just take your wheel bearing with you and go visit your local bearing supplier.
Doesn't anyone use their Yellow Pages anymore?

Purchase made in the good ole USA or Japan bearings and get out and ride!

What are you thinking? If you save a buck or two will you really feel safer?

Just me I guess

Like FunJimmy, I will take the bearing to my local bearing supplier in town and have him match it up. If you don't have a local bearing supplier then check with the local automotive shop/NAPA/Pep boys and see if they can source the bearing

Like I said earlier, the best bet is the dealer. You know those bearings are high quality.

I jsut read in a bearing thread last week about this, it stated that one should get the bearing that went 62xx-2RS and that the 2RS represented double sealed. It also said that bearings that had a number like 62xx-zz were ones not to get because the -zz means dust sheilds only. Hope this helps, if I am wrong someone will correct me. ;)

I am currently going through this as well, I read all the links on this site, and as many have said, go to your local "bearing warehouse" Well I called the bearing company in town, and they quoted me $23 for the front "EA", 6302-2RS. They said they were some Chinese brand. I passed. I checked out Z1 and they had what I needed at a fair price, but didn't want to wait for shipping. Sooo, I went to the local cycle shop, and they had what I needed for $4.49 EA. They were All Balls brand which I believe is what Z1 carries. I have to install them yet, however they look to be quality. These were aftermarket, not HONDA PARTS. my .02.

This is what I was saying that I was trying to avoid. I am not worried about the price, as stated in my original post. I want the best quality.

I am going to have to check around my area for a bearing supplier. I know what you are saying about the "local bearing supplier". But I would prefer to get advice from people off of this board on there real life time experiences with XXXXX brand and go from there. It is not that I don't trust my local supplier it is more asking the general consensus on what brand works and which sucks.....

I was wondering a couple things about bearings:

1.  How often should they be replaced?  Bike has 12k miles on it.
2.  Anything special in replacing them?  I have replaced bearings on trailers but never on a bike.

thanks

1) The bike is very easy to disconnect the speedo cable so the miles may be off. I'm not saying you are lying, I am just saying....

2) Type in wheel bearings in the search box (top right) you will find tutorials and advice on how to do them.

I have All Ballz in two of my bikes wheels. I was happy with the quality and price.
